Write a Poem  About any subject  Must be at least 30 lines  Must include at least 2 examples of each of  metaphor  simile  personification  contrast  vivid imagery  Must include at least 1 allusion to one of the poems we’ve read as a class  Can rhyme or not, have meter or not  Must establish a specific mood that can clearly be identified by a reader  Must be something you’d be comfortable with another person reading

Workshop/Revision  Write on your poem:  what you like—what are you proudest of?  what you’re stuck on/can’t figure out  what you’re most insecure about  one specific piece of advice/input you’d like to receive  Trade papers with a classmate of your choice.

Workshop/Revision  Read the poem once through without marking anything.  Next, identify what’s great about the poem—be specific!!  Without discussing it with the poet, write down what you think the mood of the poem is and why you think that/what images or words from the poem give you that mood.  Address the specific piece of input or advice the poet requested.  Identify three things that could be removed from the poem to make it sharper or clearer.  Identify a place the poet could add an image, detail, or figure of speech to enhance the depth or complexity.  Give the poem—with your comments—back to the poet.

Revise  Choose specific phrases, images, metaphors, or other figures to sharpen or improve.  Choose specific phrases to remove for clarity or precision.  Add at least 5 more words that enhance the mood you’ve established—especially if the mood your workshop partner identified wasn’t the one you were going for.  Final draft due to Turnitin.com by 7:30 a.m. Monday.
