POETRY!

ACROSTIC POEMS ❖ 1. Pick a topic to write about. ❖ 2. Write a word related to your topic vertically. ❖ 3. Brainstorm words or phrases that describe your idea. ❖ 4. Write your brainstormed words or phrases on the lines that begin with the same letters. ❖ 5. Fill in the rest of the lines to create a poem.

ACROSTIC POEM EXAMPLE We love to go on walks together. You like to swim in the river And get muddy from rolling in the dirt. The best thing about you is That you love everyone you meet.

CINQUAIN 1. Cinquains are five lines long. 2. They have 2 syllables in the first line, 4 syllables in the second line, 6 syllables in the third line, 8 syllables in the fourth line, and just 2 syllables in the last line. 3. These poems don’t need to rhyme, but you can make them rhyme for an added challenge.

CINQUAIN POEM EXAMPLE Wyatt! He is so cute. He likes to eat sweet treats. He will rip stuffing out of toys. Love him!

CLERIHEW POEMS 1. They are four lines long. 2. The first and second lines rhyme with each other, and the third and fourth lines rhyme with each other. 3. The first line names a person, and the second line ends with something that rhymes with the name of the person. 4. A Clerihew should be funny, but respectful.

CLERIHEW POEM EXAMPLE Wyatt is my Golden Retriever He chews on wood just like a beaver. He fetches sticks, balls, and toys He plays with everyone, girls and boys!

SHAPE POEM EXAMPLE

SHAPE POEMS 1. Choose a topic for your poem, then choose an object or shape that relates to our topic. 2. Draw a simple outline of your shape on paper. Write a rough draft of your poem with 6-12 lines on paper. Describe how the subject makes you feel. 3. Shape poems don’t have to rhyme. 4. Write your poem on the outline of your shape and color shape if desired.

DIAMENTE POEMS 1. Diamantes are seven lines long. 2. The first and last lines have just one word. The second and sixth lines have two words. The third and fifth lines have three words. And the fourth line has four words. 3. Lines 1, 4, and 7 have nouns. Lines 2 and 6 have adjectives. Lines 3 and 5 have verbs.

DIAMENTE POEM EXAMPLE Wyatt Funny, Silly Running, Swimming, Sleeping Toys, Treats, Bones, Sticks Barking, Snoring, Licking Affectionate, Handsome Dog

HAIKU POEMS Line 1: 5 syllables Line 2: 7 syllables Line 3: 5 syllables

HAIKU POEM EXAMPLE Wyatt likes to run. He will chase after squirrels But never catch them.

LIMERICK POEM 1. They are five lines long. 2. Lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme with one another. Lines 3 and 4 rhyme with each other. 3. They are usually funny.

LIMERICK POEM EXAMPLE Wyatt can be very funny He will chase a squirrel or bunny. If you say the word “treat” He will jump to his feet. He will play outside if it is sunny.

TANKA POEM 1. A Tanka poem is a longer version of a Haiku poem. 2. Line 1 has 5 syllables Line 2 has 7 syllables Line 3 has 5 syllables Line 4 has 7 syllables Line 5 has 7 syllables

TANKA POEM EXAMPLE Wyatt likes to run. He will chase after squirrels, But never catch them. He loves to play in his yard. But beware, he will lick you!

ALLITERATION POEM 1.Pick a consonant. 2.Think of as many words as you can that begin with that consonant. 3.Form sentences with your brainstormed words. 4.Try to add rhyme to your sentences for an extra challenge.

ALLITERATION POEM EXAMPLE Wyatt bought a big bone. He buried the bone in the backyard by his bed. His best buddy Ben begged him for a bite, But instead Wyatt gave him his beloved brown ball.

EXAGGERATION POEM To exaggerate means to claim something is greater than it really is. Example- “My dog is as big as a house” 1. Pick a characteristic of something and exaggerate it as much as you can. The crazier, the better!

EXAGGERATION POEM EXAMPLE I ate a spicy pepper From my brother on a dare. The pepper caught my head on fire And burned off all my hair. My mouth erupted lava And my tongue began to melt. My ears were shooting jets of steam. At least that’s how they felt. - Ken Nesbitt
