Office Hours & Contact Information Work Number: (248) I encourage open communication between home and school. I will be available to answer phone calls and s during school hours (7:15am-3:00pm), and will make every effort to return s within 24 hours of their receipt. I will also be available to meet by appointment after school hours between 3:00pm-4:00pm or during my prep (second hour on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) or (Wednesday or Thursday 5 th hour.) I will answer phone calls during the day as long as I am not teaching. My primary concern is your child’s education.
Sample Daily Schedule 7:15am – 7:30am: Buses arrive at Seaholm. 1 st Hour 7:30am-8:43am: Lockers, Bathroom, and Prepare for the Day -Group: Calendar, and Weather -Learning Strategies: Deskwork (Independent work) related to IEP goals and prevocational/vocational skills, and work on IEP goals pertaining to various subject areas. 2 nd Hour 8:51am-10:09am: Adapted Physical Education (PE) ( Monday, Tuesday, and Friday) 3 rd Hour 10:17am-11:30am : Math: Math Materials: Equals Math, Unique Learning Systems (ULS) math lessons, Market and Money Math, and Math Fluency B Lunch: 11:30am-12:10pm 12:18pm – 1:30pm 4 th Hour: Language Arts: Four Blocks of Literacy: Guided and Shared Reading, Word Work (Making Words), Self-Selected Reading (Silent Reading), and Writing 1:38pm-2:50pm 5 th Hour: ULS-Science and Social Studies curriculum that includes (Language Arts) lessons Prepare to go Home and Classroom Jobs A Week: Special: Adapted Music (Thursday), and B Week Adapted Music (Wednesday) *Note: Your child may have adapted PE with another class due to his/her mainstreaming schedule

Comprehensive Instruction The components of comprehensive instruction are: Reading Comprehension: Guided Reading/Shared Reading Word Study/Word Work (Phonics + Word Recognition) Self-Selected Reading (Silent Reading) Writing
Reading Comprehension Instruction Use a Before > During > After format Before Build or activate background knowledge Set a clear purpose During Read while actively thinking about purpose After Complete task directly related to the purpose Provide feedback and return to the text
Guided Reading: Primary purposes are to assist students to: – understand that reading involves critical thinking – become more strategic in their own reading Must use a wide variety of books and other print materials Maximize Thinking Develop the skills and understanding necessary to be strategic in reading a wide variety of texts Increase student ability to self select and apply purpose for comprehension Guided Reading Activities(Reading for Comprehension): -Making predictions, increasing vocabulary knowledge, and understanding story elements (characters, setting, etc.) Example: Use during Language Arts Block
Shared Reading: Maximize Interaction- Builds vocabulary and knowledge of the world Builds and promotes use of oral language concepts Offers a language-rich context to foster expressive communication Shared Reading Activities are: Echo and Choral reading Language rich Interactive Print based Open ended Student focused Example: Use during Unique Learning Systems (ULS) lessons
The Word Wall Typically 5 new words are added each week Include high frequency words (sight words) Include words that have common spelling patterns (one for each word family) Teach the meaning of the words when they are added to the wall Say and spell each word while clapping and chanting the letters then write the word Words are placed alphabetically by first letter and do not move once they have been added to the wall Refer to the wall throughout the day to encourage its use In addition, words will be used from ULS to encourage meaningful learning
Word Work All students need instruction that helps them: Decode unfamiliar words Read most words automatically
Some Word Wall Activities Dictate sentences using only Word Wall words Spell word wall words that share a spelling pattern with the rhyming words. “I am thinking of a word that starts with l and rhymes with hike.” Play I Spy “I am thinking of a word on the wall. It has 4 letters. It is on a yellow card. It rhymes with the word pain. The word is …”
Self-Selected Reading (Silent Reading) Increase the odds that students choose to read when they don’t have to. Increase competence in skimming, scanning, sampling, and selecting appropriate and interesting books. Increase competence in sharing interest and excitement about reading. Increase fluency in application of skills learned in guided reading and words blocks.
