Back in the Day… Pong – a simulated ping pong game where players had to hit a “ball” with “paddles.”

Current Generation… Popular titles including Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Halo, EverQuest, Doom and many more have one thing in common– Kill everything!

Early Childhood: Titles rated Early Childhood -For children Age 3+ -Does not contain any material that parents would find inappropriate. Everyone: Titles rated Everyone (E) have content -For Ages 6+ -They may contain minimal violence, some comic mischief (for example, slapstick comedy), or some crude language.

Teen: Titles rated Teen (T) have content - For Ages May contain violent content, mild or strong language, and/or suggestive themes. Mature: Titles rated Mature (M) have content -For Ages 17+ -These titles may include mature sexual themes, blood, violence, nudity, violence, and the use of drugs & alcohol.

Risks for Children -Increased aggression due to violent games. -Social isolation neglect of real-life relationships for virtual ones. -Diversion from real-life responsibilities -Addiction

Video Game Facts -There is over 5,000 games that are T- rated or higher available in stores. - 7 out of 10 kids own and or play M-rated games. - Girls play an average of 5hrs/week. - Boys play an average of 13hrs/week. - 45% of Kids purchased there M-rated game without a parent. - 78% of Boys say they own a M-rated game.

One researcher, Dr. Ronald Slaby, has found: 1. Aggressor Effect – encouraging violent behavior. 2. Victim Effect – increased fearfulness. 3. Bystander Effect – leading to callousness, accepting violence as normal. 4. Increased Appetite Effect – building a desire to watch more violence or play violent games.

1. Check the ESRB Rating. Read the Description. 2. Avoid Shooting Games. 3. Set Time Limits. 4. Watch for Signs of Addiction. 5. Avoid Online games. 6. Set Priorities. 7. Don’t let kids have access to games around the house.
