Alfred Lord Tennyson

Background “The Lady of Shalott” – Tennyson used the King Arthur legends as a basis for the story Some critics believe the poem is a reflection of Tennyson’s own life as a poet (Starving artist idea)

Sir Lancelot

What was Camelot?  Camelot was the great castle of King Arthur. Camelot was the seat of power in Britain, where inside a council was established. Arthur and his knights who presided over the council were called Knights of the Round Table. Camelot symbolized the Golden Age of Chivalry.

Extended Metaphor The term extended metaphor refers to a comparison between two unlike things that continues throughout a series of sentences in a paragraph or lines in a poem. It is often comprised of more than one sentence and sometimes consists of a full paragraph.metaphorcomparison

Extended Metaphor – example “Bobby Holloway says my imagination is a three-hundred-ring circus. Currently I was in ring two hundred and ninety-nine, with elephants dancing and clowns cart wheeling and tigers leaping through rings of fire. The time had come to step back, leave the main tent, go buy some popcorn and a Coke, bliss out, cool down.” (Dean Koontz, Seize the Night. Bantam, 1999)

SOS Summary  Statement  Opinion  Support STATEMENT: Tennyson’s use of symbolism shows he does not possess a feminist point of view.
