By Ciara Kelly (N ) Caught in the Web: Does Social Media Interaction Replace Face to Face Communication?

Content Pro's and con's of Social Media How it effects relationships between others It's role in education It's role in the workplace If it replaces face to face communication

What is Social Networking? Social Networking, is an 'umbrella term' that encompasses a variety of online platforms where people create, share, comment and distribute content, it is rapidly growing to become one of the most popular activities on the internet.

Pro's of Social Media Social networking sites spread information faster than any other media Social media sites help employers find employees and job seekers find work Social networking sites facilitate face to face interaction Colleges and Universities use Social Media to recruit and retain students

Con's of Social Media Social media enables the spread of unreliable and false information Social networking sites lack privacy Social media entices people to waste time Social media causes people to spend less time interacting face to face

How It Effects Relationships Social Media is a fast, easy and lazy way of communication It can cause problems to arise if people are lazy and find it a more convenient way of communicating with others

Its Role in Education Colleges and Universities applications and other social media tools to increase student retention They use an online tool called Blackboard Lecturers post lecture slides that students may have missed if absent This tool is to be used as an aid with lectures. Attendance is still a crucial requirement

Its role in the Workplace Tools such as Skype can be helpful in the workplace if a meeting needs to be held with another that cannot attend Certain Social Media tools can be ineffective in the workplace because of the chances of misunderstanding and the lack of trust

Does it replace Face to Face Communication? It is evident that Social Media has become the dominate form of communication It is a fast, easy and lazy way of communication and replaces face to face communication in some ways Good for keeping in touch with loved ones It is convenient and as technology develops and keeps changing, the way society communicates will develop and change with it
