HISTORY OF THE CITY St. Petersburg was founded in 1703 where the Neva flows into the Baltic Sea. It became truly a “window into Europe”. The Russian Navy, the Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Arts, the first museums, and the first theatres were all built on the banks of the Neva. It is associated with the names of Lomonosov, Mendeleyev, Pushkin, Gogol, Nekrasov, Dostoyevsky, Gorky, Glinka, Repin, Bryullov. In 1917 the Great October Socialist Revolution took place in Petrograd. In the years of the Great Patriotic War Leningrad survived in a blockade that lasted 900 days. Nowadays St. Petersburg spread out over 44 islands. This city attracts thousand tourists from over the world.
