Lead-in and pre-reading The Great Wall Stonehenge

It is the mysterious stone circle at stonehenge in English. People began building the site about 3100BC. And the construction continued in staged until about 1500BC. Some believe that the site was used by early astronomers and other suggest that the site was used as a burial ground for important people. Because of the size of the stones the complexity of their arrangement and the efforts that must have gone into its construction. It is reasonable to assume that the site was built to serve some significant purpose.

We know The Great Wall and Stonehenge are symbols of their countries and their culture. They make their countries great and now I want to ask you a question : What make a city great?

Reading What is the difference between “a city of heroes” and “heroes of a city”? Why are the people of st.petersburg heroes?

Language points 1.Where there is a river, there is a city. 有河流的地方就有 城市． Where 在这引导的是地点状语从句，相当于介词 in/at/to + the place + where 从句（定语从句）意思是 “ 在什 么地方 ” ． e.g. 无风不起浪，事出有因． Where there is smoke, there is fire ２． It is true that many of the world’s great cities have been built on the banks of river.It is true that…… It be + adj + that-clause e.g. it is important that you get well again quickly. 你讯速的康复才是最重要的．

Language points 3.In ruin : badly damaged or destroyed. 毁坏 了的． E.g. 侵略者把这城市夷为废墟． Invaders left the city in ruin 4.……do everything sb can to = ……do what we can do to. E.g. The doctor did everything they could to save the boy’s life. = The doctor did what they could do to save the boy’s life 5. During his life time : throughout his life.

Summary and homework In this period. We have learned a passage about st.pertersburg from it. after class,You need to read the passage again and the post-reading, next class, we will check it. Beside,we have aslo learnt some sentence patterns and phrases.after class you need to use them to make sentences.
