Writing an introductory paragraph “A journey of 1000 miles must begin with a single step.”

First Impressions Introductory Paragraph Priorities: 1.Grab the readers’ attention (Make them want to read more!) 2. Let the reader know what the piece will be about. 3. Include a STATEMENT that gives the CONTEROLLING IDEA - be informative and direct.

Introductory Paragraph It hooks the reader.hooks the reader. It introduces the topic of a piece without announcing it. (NOT ‘I am writing an essay to explain…’) It provides enough background information so that the reader can understand what’s coming up in the essay It uses thought-provoking words. thought-provoking words. It states the controlling idea for the piece. NEVER ASSUME THAT THE READER KNOWS WHAT THE PROMPT WAS ABOUT.

Order of an Introductory Paragraph 1) Hook the reader 2) Give needed background information 3) Include a Controlling Idea Statement or CLAIM that answers the prompt/re-states the question

How do I do this? There are 3 main types of hooks 1. Open with a story (anecdotal) 2. Use a specific detail 3. Use a general statement

Opening with a story Every day after school, I look forward to spending time outside by riding my bike or skateboarding. Driving around the neighborhood is a good source of exercise and part of my daily routine. When these modes of transportation are operated in appropriate places, such as state parks or on bike trails, they can provide hours of pleasure and healthy exercise. However, when used in public places such as roads, sidewalks, and parking lots, they endanger society. Skateboards, bicycles, and scooters should be banned from public places in order to prevent injury and safeguard the public.

Using a specific detail Wind whistling, heart pumping, and spirits soaring, most bike riders and skaters feel the benefits of enjoying a ride in the park.

Use a general statement (start out less specific, then include more details) At first glance skateboards, bicycles, and scooters appear to be harmless recreational vehicles.

YOUR TURN Using the claim statement that you created about Children and Punishment, write an introductory paragraph. Remember, you will need A hook Background information Claim
