1. Speaking and reading Brothers and SistersFamily, Friends and colleagues When the Wright brothers were children, few people could have guessed that, one day, these two Americans would become household names, renowned for inventing and building the world's first successful airplane and for making the first controlled, powered human flight. Wilbur and Orville were born in 1867 and 1871 respectively. Neither showed any great potential as children — Wilbur seems to have been a responsible, respectable child while his brother was more mischievous, once even bang expelled from elementary school. Neither received a school diploma and, after dropping out of high school in 1889, Orville started a printing business in which he was joined by his brother. Three years later the brothers opened a bicycle repair and sales shop, all the while becoming more interested in the developments in human flight that were taking place in Europe and the USA. While other potential fliers were obsessed with developing the actual flying machine and its engine, the Wrights (probably because of their experience with bicycles) realized that piloting skills were key to any successful attempt not just to get off, but to stay off the ground for any period of time. They spent three years of extensive tests with manned and unmanned gliders before they finally considered that they were ready for the final push. After weeks of frustrating mechanical problems, the brothers were ready to go with their flying machine Wright Flyer l. At Kitty Hawk in North Carolina, on December 17th 1903, Orville achieved a flight of 37 metres in twelve seconds. The brothers made four flights that day, with Wilbur, on the fourth flight, staying airborne for 59 seconds and covering 260 metres. Thus the Wright brothers took the human race on the first hesitant steps into the era of flight. Wilbur died of typhoid fever in Orville, on the other hand, was born in the age of horse- drawn vehicles and died in 1948 after the invention of supersonic flight. Brothers in Flight Page: 6
