During the summer, in the absence of school, learning declines. Throughout these months, all children backslide in math—but in literacy, the gap between high and low socio-economic status children widens.
Low-income students, who may not have the same level of access to books and literacy resources, tend to decline more than wealthier students.

Family Reading Time Have a time every day when everyone reads together. Minimum of 20 minutes. – Turn off the television – Read to each other – Talk about what your child is reading – Ask questions o Who is your favorite character and why? o What do think will happen next? Why? o Let’s change the setting. What if this happened in the winter, instead of the summer?
Set Reading Goals for the Family Age appropriate goals: – Ages 5-7, 20 to 30 minutes – Ages 8 and up 30 minutes or more Give incentives for meeting the goal: – Ice cream – Extra 30 minutes of television or computer time – Extra 30 minutes outside to play – Choose a special game to play
