Role of the Coach “All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players…each man in there own time plays many parts” (William Shakespeare)

Role of the Coach Coaches have many roles to play and many tasks to perform. Group discussions – groups of 3 – 5 List and discuss the various roles and tasks that coaches perform

“Basketball is not the ultimate. It is of small importance in comparison to the total life we live.” (John Wooden) Overall responsibility – to instill in participants lifetime values of sportsmanship and fair play by establishing a positive sport environment

Role of the Coach Ability to instill values depends on how well you understand: 1. Participant’s reasons for being in sport 2. Knowledge about the roles of coaches and what makes a “coach” 3. Values of fair play and adhere to an appropriate philosophical approach
