TO Begin VOCAB WORD – Definition – Rhyming Word Word: bilk Definition: cheat or defraud; escape paying one’s debts. Sounds like: milk

Bilk/Milk—Poetry You left the milk by the door To be bilked by a boar.

Bilk/Milk—Song For now…. Sing with me to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Milk, milk, milk my cow Or else I’ll need to bilk from a sow

Bilk/Milk—Acting I You put (put down) the milk by the door (point to the door) To be bilked (slap!) by a boar.

One more example….. Word: derelict Sounds like: deer lick Definition: deserted, abandoned, neglected.

Let’s try one together… Word: Shoddy Sounds like: __________ Definition: of poor quality. IN your teams, determine what shoddy sounds like. Then, take 5 minutes (AS A TEAM) to come up with a way to remember the definition: poetry, art, song, or acting it out!

In your teams You will try using an “English” word. These words have definitions, but you can (usually) showcase a skill, too. Get creative!!!

To Draw a picture 1) Write the new word. 2) Write the definition. 3) Find a rhyming word. 4) Think of relationship between the definition and the rhyming word. 5) Draw a picture of the relationship you imagined. 6) Turn it in to Ms. DeGraff or Ms. Shaman To create a song 1) Write the new word. 2) Write the definition. 3) Find a rhyming word. 4) Create relationship between the definition and the rhyming word. 5) Write a song using the rhyming word and the new word. 6) Record your song using the recorders on the table. (Ask Ms. DeGraff or Ms. Shaman for help). 7) Turn in the recorder to Ms. Shaman. 8) Pick another word and work on it.

To use your body movement 1) Write the new word. 2) Write the definition. 3) Find a rhyming word. 4) Think of relationship between the definition and the rhyming word. 5) Act out the meaning of the new word using the rhyming word. 6) Ask Ms. DeGraff or Ms. Shaman to video record your act and say the word and explain your act. 7) Turn in the recorder and this page to Ms. Shaman. 8) Pick another word and work on it. To write a poem 1) Write the new word. 2) Write the definition. 3) Find a rhyming word. 4) Write a poem using the rhyming word and the new word. 5) Turn it in to Ms. Shaman.

WordDefinition Dependent (clause) BLUE A group of words that can NOT stand along as a complete sentence. It is dependent on another clause. Independent (clause) GREEN A group of words that can stand along as a complete sentence. Simple Sentence YELLOW IT has a subject and a verb with one complete thought. Compound Sentence ORANGE A sentence that consists of two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction. Complex Sentence RED A sentence that has one independent clause joined by a dependent clause using a subordinator. Compound-Complex Sentence PURPLE A sentence that has at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause. Option: poetry, art, song, or acting it out!

Word Definition Conjunction GREEN A part if speech that connects words, sentences, phrases, or clauses. Subordinator YELLOW A words that functions to join two independent clauses, making one clause dependent. Clause RED A group of words that have a noun and a verb. Diction BLUE Word choice and use in writing. Connotation PURPLE The idea or feeling a work invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning. Cultural assumption. Denotation ORANGE The literal meaning of a word. Dictionary definition. Thesis If you have time… A statement or theory that is put forward as a premise to be proved.

HOMEWORK due MONDAY 9/22 You need to pick 3 words from OTHER classes. Come up with ways to remember these words, just like we have done in class. Please use the template. This PPT will be on PEP for reference.
