Overview Estate Owned by: Massimo d'Alessandro and Giuseppe Calabresi Wine Region: Toscana Winemaker: Silvano Acquarelli Total Acreage Under Vine: 93 Estate Founded: 1967 Winery Production: 100,000 Bottles

Location Located in Cortona in the province of Arezzo, between Siena and Perugia. Cortona is a beautiful hamlet, entirely built with medieval architecture and with numerous chapels and narrow streets Grape growing and wine making traditions in Cortona are documented back to Etruscan time Climate is hot and dry in the summer with wide day/night temperature excursion. Nearby Lake Trasimeno works as a natural air conditioning system Soils are mostly clayey and sandy Received DOC status in 1999 when all the local producers created the consorzio Cortona Syrah DOC: Min 85% Syrah, 15% of other red grapes (usually Cabernet/Merlot)

History The d'Alessandro family purchased the 250 acres Manzano farm in Cortona. In 1988 Massimo d'Alessandro began experimenting with Syrah with renowned agronomist Attilio Scienza to determine the quality of the area. The perfect matching of selected Cote Rotie Syrah clones with particular plots delivered excellent results and set the stage for Syrah planting in Cortona to Tenimenti Luigi d'Alessandro gradually planted almost 100 acres of Syrah at a high density (3,200 vines per acre).

History International recognition and awards, in particular for the Il Bosco label, brought several major producers, including Antinori (La Braccesca) and Ruffino, to purchase land in Cortona to plant Syrah. Still today after 20 years Tenimenti Luigi d'Alessandro continues to invest in the quality of its wines with great care, thanks to the cooperation of consultants like Luca Currado (Vietti), Christine Vernay, and Danny Schuster (Ornellaia, Opus One) Today the Syrah from Tenimenti d’Alessandro represents the quality benchmark for all Italian Syrahs

Owners Massimo d'Alessandro and Giuseppe Calabresi, had the idea to allocate a portion of the historic buildings for the "creation of a village" dedicated to wine lovers. Borgo Syrah Cortona DOC 100% Syrah This wine was born out of a project the winery undertook restoring seven historic buildings and remodeling them into 20 apartments. The idea was to create a "borgo," or small village, of wine lovers, who could live amongst the vines. Aromas of blackberries, licorice and balsam. On the palate, the wine is juicy and velvety, with a long finish. Pair with aged cheeses, grilled vegetables, and salami.

Fontarca IGT 100% Viognier A portion of the grapes are fermented and aged in barrel to increase the richness of the final wine. Aromas of wildflowers, straw, anise, and notes of lemon peel. On the palate, the wine has the characteristic oilyness of Viognier which is balanced by bright acidity and a pleasantly long finish. Pairs well with sushi, risotto alla milanese, grilled calamari and asparagus quiche.

Il Bosco Syrah Cortona DOC 100% Syrah This wine is named after the winery's oldest vineyard, Il Bosco. Aromas of mocha, cigar box, red berries and Mediterranean flowers. On the palate, bracing acidity is complemented by firm tannins, giving the wine a full body and excellent structure. Pair with grilled steaks, prosciutoo wrapped grissini and mustard glazed lamb chops with toasted pine nuts.

Migliara Syrah Cortona DOC 100% Syrah It is the result of years of research in zoning and clonal selection, delivering the best expression of Cortona. Aromas of black plums, fresh spearmint and coffee. This wine has rich an grippy tannins with amazing depth and a long finish. Pair with grilled breast of duck, spicy chicken nuggets or foie gras.
