We know that sitting in a garage doesn’t make you a mechanic or a Honda, holding bread doesn’t make you a toaster or a chef, standing in a garden doesn’t make you a cucumber or a Gardner and sitting in a classroom doesn’t make you a student or a teacher. What makes you a Gardner, Mechanic, Chef or Teacher? What makes a disciple? What makes a disciple of Jesus? Jesus seems to invite all kinds of people to follow him and yet he also seems to ask an awful lot of those who do. Jesus is High invitation and High challenge, what does that mean for those who call themselves Christian?

What does it mean to be a Disciple? At Eastside our goal is not to make disciples of Eastside, but to help others discover their own mission in the world. disciples of Jesus Our dream is for thousands of disciples of Jesus who have discovered their mission, vision, and role in the world as Disciples of Jesus.

Jesus Calls the First Disciples The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and you will see.”

So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).

Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”

Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

You are the King of Israel!”

43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45Philip found Nathanael … 49Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” … 2:1…a wedding at Cana in Galilee …2Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples.

John 21:1 After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. 2Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. 12Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. 13Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. 14This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

John 19:38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy- five pounds in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

Apostolos – An Apostle An apostle, a messenger, an envoy, a delegate commissioned by another to represent him in some way, especially a man sent out by Jesus Christ Himself to preach the Gospel; an apostle. Apostéllō, "to commission, send forth" – properly, someone sent (commissioned), focusing back on the authority (commissioning) of the sender.

Come & See 11:34 …They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Jesus wept. 11:43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 4:29“Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 21:12Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.

What is the next? All Apostles were disciples, but not all disciples are called to be apostles. It starts with the first step – we supply the movement, Jesus supplies the visuals. “What are you seeking?” Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?”
