One of the most important state symbols of Great Britain is the national flag.

 Four "historical provinces" of the Country - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

 England is represented by a red cross set on a white background. This cross is known as the St George’s Cross and has represented England is various forms from as far back as the Middle Ages and the Crusades

 Since the 16th century, it has come to be one of the most prominent and well-known symbols of England. St George, after whom the cross is named, was the patron saint of the country during the 1200’s. There were legends of this courageous saint’s having slain a vicious dragon

 Scotlands' offical national flag - that's the Saltire The actual word 'Saltire' means 'a cross with diagonal bars of equal length' and the national flag of Scotland is made up of a white saltire (St. Andrews' Cross) on a blue background.

White bands stretch from each corner of the rectangular flag, forming an X-shaped cross. The cross, called Saint Andrew's Cross, represents the cross on which Saint Andrew was crucified

 Crucifixion of St. Andrew.

 Flag of Northern Ireland Northern Ireland Northern Ireland has not had its own unique. During official events, the British government uses the Union Flag, which is the official flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and is the only flag used by the government in Northern IrelandUnion Flagofficial flagNorthern Ireland

 The Saint Patrick's Saltire is sometimes used by the government to represent Northern Ireland alongside the other countries of the United KingdomSaint Patrick's Saltire

 The Welsh flag, a red dragon a field of white and green, dates from the fifteenth century

Union Jack The national flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the most obvious symbol of the United Kingdom. It is called the Union Jack

 "Jack" is an old word which means "sailor". It explaines the name of the flag. King James Ш ( ) ordered the Union Flag to be flown on the main mast of all British ships, except for the ships of war. So the flag was flown at the front of the ships. Here the flag was flown at the front of the ships, on what was called the bowsprit. The end of the bowsprit was called the Jack Star and so we get the name of Union Jack. A “jack”, by the way, is an old word for the sailor

 Union Jack combines three flags representing England, Scotland and Ireland.

 Union Jack St. George's CrossSt. Andrew's Cross St. Patrick's Cross
