SPIRE project´s conference 20th April 2016-Brussels TASIO H2020-EE PPP GA

Title: Waste Heat Recovery for Power Valorisation with Organic Rankine Cycle Technology in Energy Intensive Industries Acronym: TASIO H2020-EE PPPGA Participants: TECNALIA RESEARCH & INNOVATION (Spain) TURBODEN SrL (Italy) D´APPOLONIA SPA (Italy) CENTRO SVILUPPO MATERIALI SPA (Italy) GEONARDO ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGIES LTD. (Hungary) GERDAU ACEROS ESPECIALES EUROPA S.L. (Spain) CEMENTI GIOVANNI ROSSI SpA (Italy) VIDRALA S.A. (Spain) 01 st Dec st May 2018 (42 months)

(WHRS): a system of components installed to recover thermal energy from a heat source. heat exchanger + heat carrier medium circuit + ORC unit+ cooling unit The main objective of the project is to develop a Waste Heat Recovery System (WHRS) based on the Organic Rankine Cycle technology incorporating a new Direct Heat exchange solution suitable for Energy Intensive Industries (EII)

Scientific/Technological goals of the project ◌ Direct Heat Exchange solution suitable for cross sectorial application in EII ◌ Selection/development of innovative materials/coatings combinations suitable for corrosive and high Temperature applications. ◌ Reduction of the overall costs while increasing efficiency of the ORC technology. ◌ Industrial Validation. DEMO site to be installed on the facilities of Cementi Rossi ◌ Pilot scale test to transform the thermal energy of the flue gases into mechanical energy (compressors).

Economic/social impacts -Increase the economic feasibility of WHRS with ORC through: a.decreasing total investment costs by reducing the complexity of heat exchangers and avoiding intermediate heat carrier circuit (up to 10%). b. increasing heat exchangers efficiency by means of innovative materials/coating (up to 15%). -Proven capacity to recover installation costs in years -Boost industrial competitiveness through reducing the electric power taken from the grid -Development of a supply chain and potential of job creation

Environmental impacts -Reduction of primary energy consumption: every kWh of electricity generated by an ORC unit in a WHRS avoids 460 kg of CO 2 -Total CO2 savings across the sectors investigated: 1300 kton CO 2 /year corresponding to 0,27% of the EU27 overall CO 2 industrial emissions -Cleaner and healthier environment

Cross-cutting issues in SPIRE relevant areas Energy efficiency by transforming otherwise unused energy of flue gases into electricity or mechanical energy Energy sustainable industrial processes through an innovative energy recovery system based on a new advanced ORC based Direct WHRS concept. Specific exploitation and dissemination activities: -project website -links with technology Platforms and Associations. Clustering activities. -scientific literature, technical conferences and trade fairs -project presentation to general public through traditional and social media Cross-sectorial technology transfer: results replicability to other EII processes
