Questioning

Turning Facts in to Questions When reading a text, look for “facts” Especially effective when reading non-fiction Fiction: look for facts that support character trait, story line (plot), conflict, and setting that are important to the story Activity: Fold paper in half. Write “Fact” on the left and “Question” on the right Reading

Night Flyers Shadow Hunters Although they may look sweet with their heart-shaped faces, barn owls are some of nature’s finest hunters. These owls are experts at grabbing their prey at night. Their bodies are built for hunting. To find their dinner, owls have to have good hearing. In addition, they have to be able to sneak up on their prey. The barn owl can handle this, too! Amazing Owl Ears Like other birds, owls hear through their ears. A bird’s ears are made to cut down on wind noise when the bird flies. However, a barn owl’s ears are designed especially for hunting. They detect even the faintest sound. They can hear the tiniest mouse squeak half a mile away!

Green (literal) Questions When reading a text, look for facts that are “right there” Think of a question that can easily be answered with that fact Very text-based Activity: Fold paper in half. Write “Question” on the left and “Answer” on the right Reading

Red (inferential) Questions When reading text, stop and think: What do I already know, how does the text support this? Answers are not found directly in the text Can have more than answer Answers include background knowledge and what was learned from the text Activity
