2016 Transition Night ( 2 nd Grade entering 3 rd Grade)

 Brittany Decker  Marideth Firman  Kristen Jeffries  Jennifer Russell Welcome! Meet the 3 rd grade Teachers

 Often become more serious and sure of themselves  Develop a greater sense of truth  Become more independent and self-sufficient  More concerned about opinions of friends than family members  Like team activities  Sometimes resist authority  Sometimes develop ailments as a way of coping with unpleasant tasks or situations Characteristics of a 3rd Grade Student

 Arrive to school promptly and ready to learn.  Ex. Supplies, medications taken, glasses, lunch etc..)  Grading system is A-U, be prepared to notice those grades coming home.  Staying informed by checking Thursday folder weekly. School Expectations

 Fluency in sight words  Comprehension  Being able to answer who, what, when, where, and why.  Recalling basic facts from a texts  How to put words in ABC order  Understanding the difference between fact and opinion Reading

 Check out books from the public library. Practice recalling facts to family or friends.  Go on a nature walk and collect items. Put the items in alphabetical order.  Using chalk write a sentence, put a box around the noun and circle the verb.  After watching a commercial, discuss with your family what it was about. Reading Summer Activities

 Mastery of addition and subtraction facts.  Mastery of 2 digit addition/subtraction with regrouping and borrowing.  Mastery of telling time to the nearest 15 minutes.  Identify and know value of all coins. Math

 Make addition and subtraction flash cards up to 20. Practice outside!  Go on a shape hunt for as many cubes, spheres, and pyramids you can find.  Count the spare change you have in your house.  Throughout the day ask your child to tell what time it is on an analog clock. Math Summer Activities

 Students who miss school show lower academic achievement than those with regular attendance.  Absences add up quickly.  Children who aren’t in school are more likely to get in trouble.  Avoid scheduling appointments during school. (8:55- 3:40)  Attendance patterns are set at a young age.  Letters are sent an 7, 14 and 20 days. After 20 days retention is considered by the school committee. Attendance
