OBJECTIVE: Students will discuss the career opportunities in the Sports and Entertainment Marketing industry and will identify the steps it takes to reach their ultimate job goal. Students will be aware of the different components of Interpersonal Skills and why these skills are valued in the job market. 2

TOP Strong Work Ethic - Employers value employees who understand and possess a willingness to work hard. 2. Dependability and Responsibility - Employers value employees who come to work on time, are there when they are suppose to be, and are responsible for their actions and behavior. 3. Possessing a Positive Attitude - Employers seek employees who take the initiative and have the motivation to get the job done in a reasonable period of time. 4. Adaptability - Employers seek employees who are adaptable and maintain flexibility in completing tasks in an ever changing workplace. Adaptability also means adapting to the personality and work habits of co-workers and supervisors. 5. Honesty and Integrity - Employers value employees who maintain a sense of honesty and integrity above all else. Good relationships are built on trust. 5

TOP Self – Motivated - Employers look for employees who require little supervision and direction to get the work done in a timely and professional manner. 7. Motivated to Grow & Learn - In an ever changing workplace, employers seek employees who are interested in keeping up with new developments and knowledge in the field. 8. Strong Self – Confidence - Self-confidence has been recognized as the key ingredient between someone who is successful and someone who is not. A self – confident person is someone who inspires others. A self-confident person is not afraid to ask questions on topics where they feel they need more knowledge. 9. Professionalism - Employers value employees who exhibit professional behavior at all times. 10. Loyalty - Employers value employees they can trust and who exhibit their loyalty to the company. Loyalty in the workforce has taken on a new meaning. Gone are the days when employees plan on starting out and retiring with the same company. It is said that most people will hold between 8 – 12 jobs throughout their career. 6

Starting A Career Internship programs – Gives students a taste of the sports and entertainment profession. Usually Inters who make a positive impression are often one of the 1 st people considered when a positions is available. Entry-level occupations – Involves Routine activities. For an ambitious employee, they should only be in a entry level position for a short time. Career-level jobs – Allow employees to control some of their work and make some decisions. 7

Starting a Career Specialist occupations – Requires a variety of skills in one or more business functions. Specialist are the most skilled expert in their field. Supervisors – 1 st Level of Management in an organization. Usually have a great level of knowledge in the area they oversee. Executives – Perform all task necessary for managing a major function, unit or entire company. Set Standard for the entire organization Role Models for employees 8

Training In average, U.S. companies spend $50 Billion to $60 Billion each year on formal training programs. Most of these programs are designed to improve the productivity of employees. Informal training, such as learning on the job, self-study, and coaching, cost an additional $200 Billion. 10

11 Human Relations It is very important in business to work well with others. If you are able to get along with your peers, you have a better chance of success within your company. #1 reason people are fired from their jobs is: because they cannot get along with others. “Make friends; not enemies.”

12 Body Language Body language is the gestures, posture, mannerisms, and eye contact through which a person communicates thoughts to others. 60% - 80% of what is communicated comes from body language. Be aware of your posture when you are at work. Learn to control/manage your facial expressions.

14 “Soft Skills” Skills that are not easily taught and learned are called soft skills. Soft Skills will help you succeed in business. Examples are: Friendliness, Courtesy, and Tact Personal Ethics Creativity, Initiative, and Responsibility Attitude Self-Control and Orderliness Self-Awareness and Willingness to Change Empathy

15 “Schmoozing” Move out of your comfort zones and strike up conversations with people you do not know. The key to schmoozing is sincerity. When talking to others, always be sincere with compliments. Many people at the top of their fields are great schmoozers. This is how they make new contacts and create new business.

16 Teamwork A team is a group of people that work together in order to achieve a goal. Teamwork is the skill they use to achieve that goal. Successful teams are good at: Training Team Planning Setting Team Goals Assigning Roles for Team Members Sharing Responsibility and Shared Leadership

17 Being a Valuable Team Member Make the team’s goals your top priority. In meetings, listen actively and offer suggestions. Build positive group dynamics with team members. Communicate with team members outside of meetings. Resolve conflicts among team members. Respect all members of the team Inspire other employees to get involved.
