3 INTRODUCTION T he Malaysian wood-based industry continues to remain as one of the major contributors to the country’s export earnings, providing employment opportunities to about 300,000 people. The industry is also a significant player in the Malaysian economic development. I n line with the Government’s aspiration to continuously develop the timber industry, MTIB, in collaboration with UPM and UiTM is organising the Annual Timber Research & Industry Briefing as a means to disseminate vital information on the timber industry. S everal research findings will be presented in this briefing session, which will update participants on recent R&D findings that may have an impact on the industry. Several important aspects of the wood-based industry will also be discussed.
