In the world today, how many adults (aged 15 years and over) are unable to read or write? a)20 million b)100 million c)500 million d)Over 700 million ANSWER: d) Over 700 million Approximately 774 million adults in the world today are unable to read or write. That’s more than 35 times Australia’s entire population!

Of this 774 million people, what percentage are women? a)Less than 30% b)50% c)More than 60% ANSWER: c) More than 60% 64 % or two-thirds of the world’s illiterate adults are female.

In East Timor, what percentage of adults are able to read or write? a)98% b)78% c)58% ANSWER: c) 58% More than a third of Timorese adults are illiterate. Only 53% of Timorese women are able to read and write compared to 63 % of men.
