Their newest version, Office 365 is available for $80 to $150, based on a yearly subscription or a software purchase. There are several ways to gain access to free Office products or download alternative programs that are compatible with Office. How to Get Microsoft Office For Free

Method 1: Free Office for Students 1 - Inquire with your school's computer lab about free Microsoft Office software. Many schools buy a license that allows them to share a free version of Office with the students who are enrolled. You will need a valid school and account to access the free download, if it is available.

2 - Go to office.microsoft.com/en-us/academic to compare MS Office educational packages. These are available for free or less than the standard products, if you are a student or educator. The free version of this plan, Office 365 Education A2, provides Office Web Apps where you can make and edit Word documents and Excel spreadsheets for free online. To have desktop software, you will need to upgrade to a paid plan.

Sign up for the Office 365 Education A3 package and you will get a 30-day free trial of Office 365. The price is $2.50 per month for a student and $4.50 per month for faculty or staff. You can also upgrade further to A4 for $.50/$1.50 extra per month.

Method 2 : Office Web Apps 2- Go to office.microsoft.com/en-us/web-apps/. Microsoft Office Web Apps is Microsoft's answer to cloud programs like Google Docs. You create a Sky-Drive where you can work on basic MS programs for free and store them. This option is best if you are connected to the Internet constantly and you don't need Office for complicated design or presentations.

2 - Click on the "Get Started Free" button. If you do not already have a Windows Live ID, you will need to create a free address to set up your SkyDrive and store your documents in the cloud.

3 - Navigate to the "Create New" drop down menu. You can choose Word, Excel, One-Note or PowerPoint. Name your document.

4 - Start creating, using the Office product of your choice. Share the documents with other people on your SkyDrive by entering their address.

Method 3 : Free Open Source Alternatives 1- Download an open source program that is designed to mimic Microsoft Office. Open source programs like LibreOffice provide a suite of programs for free.

2 - Get a suite of programs for free, like Writer (Word), Calculator (Excel), Impress (PowerPoint), Base (Access) and Math and Draw. Go to libreoffice.org/download. Unless you are working on a company network that uses other MS products, like Outlook, this free program can provide you with the functions most people use with Office.

3 - Consider CarbonOffice, another free Office alternative software download that is based on the MS model.

Method 4 : Free Online Alternatives 1 - Open a free account at ThinkNO. These programs have more functionality than Microsoft Office Web Apps. They are attractive and easy to work with as long as you have a stable and constant Internet connection.

2 - Use Google Docs and Google Drive to make and store documents online. If you use a lot of Google's products, including their , you may benefit from making and storing their Office-style documents online. As with ThinkFree, Google Docs are completely cloud based. You can download the documents to your computer, but may not have access to them offline without Office or LibreOffice already downloaded.

Method 5 : Using Mobile Apps 1 - Create a Windows Live ID if you do not already have one. 2 - Download the official Microsoft Office apps on your smart phone. Microsoft currently offers its wide array of mobile office apps for a variety of platforms, including Android phones and iPhones. If you do not have a smart phone, use an Android emulator like BlueStacks to install and use the Microsoft mobile apps.BlueStacks 3 - Access your documents later on the PC if needed. The mobile apps make use of Microsoft's cloud storage to transfer your documents and keep them in a safe place. Therefore, they may be accessed and edited from the online PC web interface as well.
