Curriculum Night– Welcome!! September 17, 2015

Remembering our district goals 100% proficiency in reading 100% proficiency in writing 100% proficiency in mathematics Differentiated approach to instruction – meeting the needs of all of our students! Communicating the curriculum – to students, to parents, and to each other These goals will be the focus of all that we do.

State of Norup International School Removal of Focus School designation – three years into a five year cohort. Enrollment at 800 students – highest since K-8 opened. District bond issue passing will make many updates and additions to our building. Many staff changes and shifts – “putting the right people in the right seats on the bus”

What’s going on for this year? Cultures of Learning/Visible Thinking and Conscious Discipline Training continues for PYP Connected Math 3 now in all middle school grades IB exhibition in 8 th grade and preparatory-like exhibitions in 3 rd and 4 th grade Revamped learning specialist system in elementary Reader’s Apprenticeship training to begin in middle school Bond issue construction

Staff Changes NEW HIRES Shana Ramin – 7 th /8 th grade ELA Kristin Metz – part time 6 th /7 th grade ELA Claire Townsend – French I/II, shared with Anderson and Norup Samantha Ellis – Elementary Counselor Tim Folmar – Norup/BHS Bands Kezzie Chudler – Elementary Parapro (pending) Cindy Luckett – Elementary Parapro

Staff Changes Other Changes Megan Throm moves from full time MYP science to part time MYP science, part district curriculum support. Jen Wilcox moves from Burton 5 th grade to part time MYP science, part district curriculum support Adrienne Novales moves from full time BHS Spanish to part time BHS Spanish and part time Norup MYP Spanish Judy Garlock replaces Nikki Stone’s 1 day of PYP art per week. Lindsey Tycholiz picks up one class at BHS, Kris Gulesarian comes over from Angell to teach K-2 music. That’s a lot of change – but change is an opportunity, not a detriment.

Bond Summary Construction to begin after “defrost”; demolition to occur during summer –Brand new 7,800 sq cafeteria/orchestra class/performance space –Computer lab consolidation and mobile labs for PYP grades –Revamped learning specialist/resource room wings –Current kitchen to be revamped to a choral music room –Technology upgrades in all classrooms –More storage –Expansion of art entrance so students remain indoors to go to PYP art –Locks/fobs/camera system –Wi-Fi improvements –Rounded, extended “circle” drive –Guts/miscellaneous updates

At the end of the day….. Staff change and professional development plans have rejuvenated the staff……some adjustment time will be needed. We are going to have another good year because of our solid staff, outstanding parents, and excellent students.
