Day 1, Session 4 The Responsibility Navigator 1 [insert name of the workshop]: RRI in relation to [insert your subject/field] [e.g. Amsterdam, April 16-17, 2015]

RRI & ‘governance’ of RRI The Responsibility Navigator approach: o Given various RRI ambitions… o … how to think about challenges and conditions in pursuing such ambitions For example: o Goals: tensions and trade-offs o Understanding: different problem framings o Knowledge and resources: limited o Change: integrative while keeping open for learning o …

The Responsibility Navigator RRI governance challenges: collective rather than individual Three key areas: 1. Ensuring quality of interaction 2.Positioning and orchestration 3.Developing supportive environments

1.Ensuring quality of interaction Broad inclusion (of diverse actors) Moderation (of discourse in ‘fora’) Deliberation (about various ‘knowledges’)

2. Positioning & orchestration Flexibility (and modularity) (of governance arrangements) Subsidiarity (of governance instruments) Adaptability (vis-a-vis changing conditions)

3. Developing supportive environments Individuals o capability building Organisations, networks o capacity building Institutional entrepreneurship Culture of transparancy, tolerance & rule of law 6

For what and for whom? A tool for ‘strategic reflection’ o Use the 3 dimensions to assess specific situations o Think about (RRI) governance as ‘interplay’ rather than control o Not assuming all aspects are ‘within reach’, but supporting the ability to think about postions as well as those of others For those working at ‘strategic’ positions
