The Intern The student must have good knowledge of written and spoken German. (Equals the successful completion of at least one 3000-level course.)

Karlsruher Institut für Technologie Similar to Virginia Tech in size and focus Engineering, Computer Science, etc. First ever was sent from the KIT campus to the U.S.!

Das Studierendenwerk Separate institution from KIT, under Deutsches Studentenwerk (nationwide German student services bureau ) Similar to a social services program for students Offer financial, social, housing help, and much more! Check out the website: And their Facebook:

International Student Center Intern works here as a key English language resource Some duties include: lead excursions, help international students, teach English, translate documents Close proximity to intern’s living quarters (Waldhornstraße 36)

Karlsruhe KIT Waldhornstraße 36 living quarters Schloss, city centerpoint

The City die Fächerstadt (Fan city) Palace at the center Good reference point Kaiserstraße is the hub Zoo, Palace (Great museum/view from tower), Center for Art and Media (ZKM) Das Fest, UNIFest, various other summer events. Ask your co-workers about them! Use public transportation, you are provided a free go-anywhere ticket as an intern! Train station easily connects to Germany/Europe, short rides to Heidelberg, Munich, Stuttgart, Strasbourg, etc. Free city-wide Wi-fi service Karlsruhe’s location in SW Germany puts it in a great spot from which to travel all over Europe =

City Layout and Hotspots Wohnheim Waldhornstraße 36 Edeka (Grocery) Menske Döner & Pizza Studierendenwerk Karlsruhe Kronenplatz S-Bahn Station Oxford Cafe Schlosspark Shopping Center Aldi (Cheaper grocery) Kaiserstraße – Shopping and food Schloss

Financing your trip Housing, travel within the city, and some food are provided as part of the internship Look to departmental or school scholarships for help with airfare Jamie Bishop Scholarship (VT German Program) Contact the Global Education Office for a complete list of scholarships Around 20-30€/week needed for spending money mostly taken out from ATMs using a debit card, chip cards more widely accepted Make sure you let your bank know that you are going abroad before you leave!

General Tips You must provide bags and bag your own groceries pizza.de = German Grubhub Ice cream is 70 cents Our favorite ice cream place: Café Böckler on Kaiserstraße Most bakeries have cheap snacks Definitely try regional specialties, e.g., Maultaschen and Käsespätzle Edeka is more expensive than Aldi Pfand: Get money back for recycling! Seat yourself at most restaurants; in most casual restaurants you will order over a counter Cash is more widespread than in the US If you want to use a card, chip cards are more widely accepted

More General Tips Get involved! See what events the university is offering during your stay Be careful about buying souvenirs- you still have a luggage weight limit! In the dorm Dressing for Work Bring a plug adapter and transformer to charge electronics (laptops usually have a transformer built into the charger) May want to bring your own sheets and pillowcase. They are given to you by the dorm but are very warm. Nice casual May want to bring a couple business casual outfits for special occasions Definitely participate in excursions or exchanges, if they’re offered!
