Derbyshire County Council Extra Care Strategy One element of wider Housing, Care and Support Strategy arising from Best Value Review of residential care in 2002 Target of 400 units – roughly 50 in each District/Borough Council area Various models and facilities based on size and local needs – new buildings/conversions

Derbyshire County Council Extra Care Strategy – actions to date Capital funding secured from Dept of Health /Housing Corporation/ Working with South Yorkshire Housing Association/ Housing 21 to develop schemes in Glossop, Wirksworth and Dronfield –total of 136 units Range of smaller projects Other projects such as Harehill Court where an Extra Care style service is being provided in a former sheltered housing scheme and Supporting People funding has been allocated

Former 17 bed residential care home set in extensive grounds Being redeveloped and extended by South Yorkshire Housing Association to create 45 x1 and 2 bedroom Extra Care apartments 12 for sale

Funding Dept of Health - £1, (DCC Land gift - £1.1 million) Revenue – £213,674 care per annum £30,000 SP Management contribution £15,000 Rents and service charges

Timescale for development Work began on site in July 2006 Steering group in place Discussions underway about the operational management of the restaurant and the respite care beds Completion date June 2008

Funding Dept of Health – £2,226,800 (land owned by Derbyshire Dales District Council transferred to Housing 21 at nil cost) Wirksworth Care group donated £20k to H21 Hoping to buy respite units and fund various items of equipment furnishing Day activity unit – joint funded by DCC Older Adults dept and Community mental health Team SP – 30K per annum Domiciliary care – £213,000 per annum Rents and service charges

Stonelow Court in Dronfield Existing residential care home will be demolished and purpose built Extra Care scheme will be built on site by SYHA to provide 44 units including 4x2 bed units for intermediate care

Facilities will include… Self contained accommodation for sale and rent 24 / 7 hour care with waking night cover Community accessible facilities including IT suite, chiropody and hairdresser, café restaurants

Progress to date Successful bid to the Housing Corporation for Social Housing Grant Funding from PCT for intermediate care SYHA won development tender and land transferred to them Development plans signed off 1/3 for sale, 1/3 homebuy and 1/3 rent

Timescale Proposed date for start on site – April 2007 Completion of development – April/May 2008

Funding Housing Corporation - £1.929, 984 PFI Site donated by DCC at nil charge Intermediate care- £561,000 capital £270,000 Domiciliary care per annum £10k SP per annum £15,000 DCC contribution towards manager per annum

Future Extra Care Demographic information about Derbyshire indicates need for additional Extra Care Schemes in development are just the beginning Opportunities being explored in all areas for possible sites including redevelopment of residential site in Swadlincote Possibility of developing additional ‘virtual’ Extra Care schemes along the Harehill court model
