Phonics Screening Information Evening Hannah: Welcome Aims: To find out about the Year 1 Phonics Screening and make suggests on how parents can best support their children.

Warm up! Write the word on a whiteboard, mark on the sound buttons and read the words: zowd smatue kighring What do they say? Why could we read it? Able to break it down? In to what…? Use of prior knowledge of how sounds and letters go together

z-ow-d s-m-a-t-ue k-igh-r-i-ng Answers z-ow-d s-m-a-t-ue k-igh-r-i-ng

PHONICS Is a way of teaching children to read quickly and skilfully. Recognise the sounds each individual letter makes. Identify sounds that different combinations of letters make e.g sh or oo. Blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word. Children use this knowledge to decode new words that they hear or see. We use ‘Letters and Sounds’: Principles and Practice of High Quality Phonics to teach Reception, Year 1 and Year 2

PHONEME The smallest unit of sound in a word. There are 44 phonemes that we teach. Julia

The 44 phonemes /b/ /d/ /f/ /g/ /h/ /j/ /k/ /l/ /m/ /n/ /ng/ /p/ /r/ /v/ /w/ /y/ /z/ /th/ /ch/ /sh/ /zh/ /a/ /e/ /i/ /o/ /u/ /ae/ /ee/ /ie/ /oe/ /ue/ /oo/ /ar/ /ur/ /au/ /er/ /ow/ /oi/ /air/ /ear/ /ure/ Julia Show sound video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqhXUW_v-1s

GRAPHEME Letters representing a phoneme e.g. c ai igh Children need to practise recognising the grapheme and saying the phoneme that it represents. Hannah Demonstrate this phoneme is this grapheme.

Following single phonemes we learn … Digraphs – 2 letters that make 1 sound ch sh zz oa ai Trigraphs – 3 letters that make 1 sound igh air ear Split digraph – A digraph in which the two letters are not adjacent make cake dome Hannah

Same sound different graphemes. Some sounds can be represented by different graphemes. o oe ow o_e oa Hannah GAME - Phoneme spotter

BLENDING SEGMENTING Recognising the letter sounds in a written word, c-l-ow-n and merging or ‘blending’ them in the order in which they are written to pronounce the word ‘clown’ SEGMENTING Hear and say the individual phonemes within words. ‘Chopping Up’ the word to spell it out clown = c-l-ow-n Julia

Screening Check A short, simple assessment to make sure that all pupils have learned phonic decoding to an appropriate standard by the age of 6. All year 1 pupils in maintained schools, academies and free schools must complete the check. The phonics check will help teachers identify the children who need extra help so they can receive the support they need to improve their reading skills. These children will then be able to retake the check in year 2. Hannah Parents write on their phoneme frames

Format of the Screening 40 Words. 20 real words 20 non or pseudo words. Hannah

Real Words gang phone Phonetically decodable. Presented on a plain card. Children can add sound buttons. phone gang Hannah

Pseudo Words vop snemp Phonetically decodable. Presented with an accompanying alien character. Children can add sound buttons. Julia vop snemp

Organisation of the Screening One to one with Miss Curtis In the week beginning: 13th June - 17th June Flexible in timings. Children can have breaks, add phoneme buttons Hannah

Results of the Screening Previous past marks have been 32 out of 40. This years pass mark will not be known until after the screening week. Parents will receive a letter sharing the results once they have been collated and verified. Hannah
