Math is required, but why do I need it? (or “when will I ever use this stuff?”)  Mathematics is about using your brain in a way that is different than you use it for most other classes.  Problem solving is the number one skill set employers will be looking for as your son/daughter enters the work force, regardless of their field.  A rigorous study in mathematics is critical to acceptance into most colleges.

Kansas Board of Regents Entrance Requirements for Kansas Public Universities Graduate High School with…  3 math credits (Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II or higher) AND score a 22 (or higher) on the ACT. OR  4 math credits (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and one class where Algebra II is a prerequisite)

High School Course Flow Chart

Freshman Year  Pre-Algebra  Algebra I  Geometry  Honors Geometry  Honors Algebra II (accelerated students)

Pre-Algebra For students who are not quite ready for Algebra 1.

AlgebraI  For students who need continued work on their Algebra skills;  Students will graduate with Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Advanced Algebra (College Algebra) or Pre Calculus;  Calculator: Scientific or TI NSpire.

Geometry  For those students with strong Algebra skills;  Rigorous course in its own right;  Will graduate after taking Advanced Algebra, Pre-Calculus or Calculus;  Technology: TI Nspire and Geometer’s Sketchpad.

Honors Geometry  For those students with exceptional Algebra skills;  Should be taken if student has a desire for higher-level mathematics;  Rigorous course – take it for that reason;  Technology: TI Nspire and Geometer’s Sketchpad.

Data to help guide course decision-making  Math selection is very important at the freshman level.  Math scores to consider:  MAP math score  Pre-Algebra recommendation: 230 RIT and below  Algebra recommendation: 240 RIT and below  Geometry recommendation: RIT  Honors Geometry recommendation: 250 RIT and higher  ACT Explore in Math  Below national 45%ile, consider Algebra I

TI-NSpire
