PLoS Medicine features important advances in all medical disciplines. With the ultimate aim of improving human health, the journal publishes original research and analysis that address the global burden of disease. Image credits: Gerrell Crichton. PLoS Medicine (1).

PLoS Genetics reflects the full breadth and inter- disciplinary nature of genetics and genomics research by publishing outstanding original contributions in all areas of biology. Image credit: Owen Booth. PLoS Genetics (10).

PLoS Pathogens publishes significant research on bacteria, fungi, parasites, prions, and viruses that contributes to our understanding of the biology of pathogens and pathogen-host interactions. Image credit: Danelle Eto. PLoS Pathogens (7).

PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases is the first open- access journal devoted to publishing high-quality research on all scientific, medical, and public health aspects of these forgotten diseases affecting the world’s forgotten people.

PLoS Biology features works of exceptional significance in all of areas of biological science, from molecules to ecosystems, including works at the interface with other disciplines, such as chemistry, medicine, and mathematics. Image credit: Niclas Fritzén. PLoS Biology (5).

PLoS Computational Biology publishes research of exceptional significance that furthers our understanding of living systems at all scales through the application of computational methods. It is the official journal of the International Society for Computational Biology. Image credit: Wouter Boomsma. PLoS Computational Biology (9).

Submit, publish, annotate, discuss, rate. PLoS ONE features research from all disciplines within science and medicine on an interactive platform, facilitating the discovery of the connections between findings - within or between disciplines.

clinicaltrials.ploshubs.org PLoS Hubs are a window on content in a specific field, collecting together open-access articles from many PLoS journals and beyond. A Hub allows a group of people interested in the same subject to share their opinions, knowledge and, ultimately, to build a dynamic, interactive community.

Why is open access important? Authors access to the largest possible audience Readers access to the entire literature Reuse of articles download, copy, print, archive Full-text searching and mining beyond Boolean text searches

PLoS ONE – Open Access 2.0 Interactive peer-reviewed journal for all scientific fields Published nearly 1400 articles since launch just over one year ago, diverse range of content. Why do people send their work to PLoS One? –Open access - freely available to anyone online –Peer-reviewed for technical soundness and scientific merit –Fast: papers appear online within an average of 14 working days from acceptance to publication –Interactive: PLoS ONE is the only scholarly journal that offers online tools for rating, commenting, and discussing research with an online community of scientists Fabulous media coverage for all major news sources world-wide How can folks get involved in PLoS ONE? –Submitting their unpublished work to PLoS ONE –Sharing their rating and comments on published papers.ratingcomments –Spreading the word

SciVee is a website made up of four main elements: What is SciVee? Science Videos Science Communities Channels

A SciVee Pubcast is a scientific publication combined with corresponding video. What is a SciVee Pubcast? SciVee began accepting uploads of videos that correspond to papers papers August 1, 2007.

Author’s possible benefits include: 1) reaching a broader audience 2) increased readership of their paper 3) increased likelihood of citation 4) increased feedback from peers Pubcast viewer’s possible benefits include: 1) a deeper comprehension of a paper’s teaching points provided directly from the author 2) a quicker comprehension of more paper’s teaching points than would be possible from a reading of the abstract alone in substantially less time than a complete reading of the paper’s content would require 3) access to a broader sampling of relevant research thereby expanding the breadth and depth of their scientific understanding 4) easier access to engage in virtual discussions with the author and other viewers How do scientists benefit from pubcasts?

SciVee Statistics (January 2008): Users: 4261 Pubcasts: 25 Videos: 294 Channels: 11 Communities: 70 How do scientists benefit from pubcasts?

What Are SciVee Channels? Pubcasts from the same journal When a scientist creates a pubcast, it is associated with other pubcasts that are from the same scientific journal that the paper was published forming a channel by the same name of the journal. Journal Named “SciVee Channel” ++=

SciVee accepts other science related videos. Science Videos Science videos can be posted to SciVee. Acceptable videos include: Supporting Data for Pubcasts Videos of Science Experiments Science Outreach Videos Non-profit Science Group Promo Science Film Contest Entries Scientific News Lab Descriptions Scientist’s Curriculum Vitae

What Are SciVee Communities? Videos from the same group Communities can be formed on SciVee to group certain videos together that belong to a particular research group or organization. Group Named “SciVee Community” ++= Pubcasts can also be added to communities

SciVee provides a place for scientists to interact. SciVee promotes communications between scientists by providing them with the ability to create and develop their own virtual communities. Members of SciVee create communities around their own scientific research interests, organizations, papers and videos. In turn, SciVee endeavors to continually listen and change SciVee to meet the needs of all the various communities on SciVee. SciVee Communities can be formed around: Specific Fields of Scientific Research Scientific Organizations Specific Educational Interests

How do profiles benefit scientists? Scientists can customize their own professional profile into a comprehensive multimedia representation of their work. Profiles provide a way to collect together a listing of an individual scientists publications, research interests, educational and vocational achievements, pubcasts, science videos, and other rich media related to their research.
