Maritza Selva Rivera ENGL ‘Online‘ Oral Presentation Part 2 Module 5 – Task 5.1- Part 2 Professor Mary Ann Toledo Conversational English SAY NO TO ABORTION

Abortion Abortion To begin with, statistics show that most of the reasons for why women want to have an abortion are either because it’s not the right time or their inadequate finances. Not valid at all! My opinion towards these reasons is that there are different answers to those problems.

Statistics Statistics 3

Statistics 1000 women aged 15–44 years (22 and 21 per 1000 women, respectively)(12 per 1000) Estimates show that women in South America, eastern Africa, and western Africa are more likely to have an unsafe abortion than are women in other regions. Unsafe abortion rates per 1000 women aged 15–44 years provide a more comparable measure of unsafe abortion by region. In Asia, south-central and southeastern regions have similar unsafe abortion rates (22 and 21 per 1000 women, respectively), whereas the rate is about half (12 per 1000) in western Asia and negligible in eastern Asia. 4

Statistics 200,000 to 1.2 million as many as 5,000 Estimates of the number of illegal abortions in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s range from 200,000 to 1.2 million per year. Prior to Roe v. Wade, as many as 5,000 American women died annually as a direct result of unsafe abortions. 0.6 per 100,000 procedures Today, abortion is one of the most commonly performed clinical procedures in the United States, and the death rate from abortion is extremely low: 0.6 per 100,000 procedures, according to the World Health Organization. 5

Abortion Abortion 3.4 times - Statistics also show women who had abortions were 3.4 times more likely to commit suicide compared to women who had not been pregnant in the previous year and 6 times more likely to commit suicide than women who delivered. - Women sadly take away their life because they can’t stand the fact that they took their child’s life away. This decision is not an easy choice to make and after it is done, it’s not something easy to forget about and worse than that, not reversible.

Abortion methods Surgical abortion uses a vacuum to remove the fetus and related pregnancy material from the uterus. The procedure is most often done 6 weeks after the woman's last menstrual period or soon afterward when possible. Chemical abortions: These are abortions caused by drugs that, at least some of the time, prevent the implantation of the already-created baby in the uterine lining. 7

Risks of abortion Risks of surgical abortion include: Damage to the womb or cervix Uterine perforation (accidentally putting a hole in the uterus with one of the instruments used) Excessive bleeding Infection of the uterus or fallopian tubes Scarring of the inside of the uterus Reaction to the medicines or anesthesia, such as problems breathing Not removing all of the tissue, with the need for another procedure. 8

Risks of abortion Death Cervical, Ovarian, And Liver Cancer Uterine Perforation Handicapped Newborns In Later Pregnancies Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) Psychological Complications 9

What The Baby Suffers? Unborn baby feels real physical pain during an abortion. Yes, every abortion kills an innocent human being. Even more alarming is the fact that beginning at the 8th week of development, an unborn baby that is aborted feels pain during the abortion. The baby feels both psychological and real physical, organic pain. Of course, whether or not abortion is a painful experience to the unborn child being aborted, the child is left no less dead as a result. In talking about the question of fetal pain, we must remember that it ultimately has no bearing on the morality of abortion. 10

Solutions Solutions My opinion towards these reasons is that there are different answers to those problems. Abortion shouldn’t be the only answer towards those issues. For example, adoption is an option.

Solutions (cont.) Solutions (cont.) Why not educate people on ways of preventing pregnancy and provide them with the options so that they don’t get pregnant? Why you don’t even like to think that abstinence is a real solution to the problem? Ah, I know the answer you are going to give me, “I like the way a baby it’s done” (Just trying to stay professional in my words). This is a Social Problem that with no doubt, the Government has to be involved in. If they do, we will drastically stop seeing so many abandoned and hungered kids on the streets, exposed to drugs, violence or even been killed. 12

Solutions (cont.) Solutions (cont.) Six (6) Ways to Prevent Abortion: - Make contraception more easily available. - Give young people a better teacher than experience. - Increase the involvement of men. - Create new birth control methods. - Make America and the World, friendlier to children. Abstinence… - Abstinence… 13

Think About This While it is more horrible for a man to torture his wife before killing her, no jury would be impressed by his decision to kill her painlessly while she slept. That same thinking is exactly what can be applied to an abortion process. 14
