Roll-Out & Sustainability 1.Be Prepared!

In keeping with the new state initiative, this fall we will be implementing an exciting new district initiative of SNI in place of LYI. All Pro-D days previously scheduled for LYI will be rescheduled as staff development for SNI. The $500 for release time and materials for LYI will be discontinued and provided instead for SNI. By the way, you will need to create local SNI teams that meet weekly. The former members of your LYI team would be perfect for this new team. Your new SNI binders will be coming next week. Have a great year!!! Memo To: School Administrators From: District Administrators

Sustainability

What is Sustainability? Definition: – Durable implementation of a practice at a level of fidelity that continues to produce valued outcomes (McIntosh et al., 2009

What is the strongest predictor of PBIS sustainability? School Priority Administrator support, staff support, perceived effectiveness, perceived efficiency, integration into new initiatives Team Use of Data School team/staff skill, functioning, regular meetings, data collection, use of data for decision making, presenting data to staff and community District Priority District support, state support, funding, district policy, promoted to external organizations Capacity Building Access to district coaching, yearly professional development, connection to a community of practice Kent McIntosh, University of Oregon OSEP PD Conference

Having a supportive administrator? Having a strong PBIS team? What is more important to sustainability? Kent McIntosh, University of Oregon OSEP PD Conference

Both! PBIS is most sustainable with a supportive administrator and a strong team If administrators take too much of a lead, sustainability can suffer School teams can benefit from training in running meetings and using data Coaching and training enable both administrators and teams to implement and sustain

Guiding Principles for Sustainability: Never stop doing what is already working Always look for the smallest change that will produce the largest effect Do not add something new without also defining what you will stop doing Collect and use data for decision-making

Roll-Out 2. Roll-Out to ALL Families & Community Students All Staff/Teachers

Roll-Out to Families Provide PBIS information to families at school registration, open houses, or parent/teacher conferences Invite families to participate in the design and implementation of the Universal Level including school-wide celebrations

Roll-Out to Families Host a Back-to-School Night to share information on ‐School-wide expectations ‐School acknowledgements ‐School matrix, sent home for posting on refrigerator ‐Tips for helping students with before and after school routines

I am respectfulListen to my parents Be truthful to my parents Play cooperatively Speak nicely to others I am responsiblePut away my toys, bike, and equipment Help with jobs at home Follow my parents’ directions Share Thursday folder with parents I am safePlay safely with others Stay in designated areas Stay away from strangers Wear bike helmet and equipment PBIS Home Matrix Roll-Out to Families

Let families know when lessons will be conducted at school and encourage families to teach lessons at home Send families a PBIS family newsletter with “cool tools” for home Connect Acknowledgement system at home What do you do?

Roll-Out 3. Connect Expectations to….. Positive Feedback

Roll-Out 4. Calibrate your Staff! Identify and understand minor vs. major behaviors The first grade class writes in a journal. The topic focuses on a particular letter each day. During the letter “F” day, Sarah writes an inappropriate word she has learned from some older students on the playground. She shows her journal to all of the students around her. DEFINE “Close Confusers!”

Your turn! In the chat box, type some of your own best ideas for rolling out PBIS
