Accelerating the Deployment of Clean Renewable Generation

2 Battery Energy Storage System Strategic Partnership IID procured over 150 MW of solar generation to meet its renewable portfolio standard requirement.  Does not include over 30 MW of demand-side generation IID is experiencing the impacts of managing intermittent resources. Through a competitive request for proposal process IID selected Coachella Energy Storage Partners (CESP) to construct and integrate to its resource portfolio a 33- MVA/20MWh BESS; project specifics:  Building 40ft. x 220ft.  360 battery racks; 5,760 total batteries  Thirty 1.25-MVA inverters and thirty MVA transformers CESP developed a partnership which included General Electric, Samsung and Chula Vista Electric

BESS Benefits A more efficient grid that is more responsive to disruptions:  Frequency response (up and down)  Voltage response (up and down)  Instantaneous generation and transmission outages  Black-start capable (4-MW) Intermittency Impacts:  Solar /wind real-time fluctuations Increase in the economic value of wind and solar power:  Energy “shifting” (mid-peak)  Enhances existing generation assets 3
