Lab Safety

Hands-on experiences are essential to learning in science class, but safety must be the first concern! The following rules exist for your safety. These rules help to prevent accidents in the lab and allow for more efficient work to occur.

When first entering the science room, do not touch any equipment, chemicals or other materials until you are instructed to do so. NEVER enter the room if unsupervised.

Stay focused & pay attention to all written and verbal instructions. Ask questions before proceeding if you are unsure. Know what you are to do before you do it.

Misbehavior CANNOT and WILL NOT be tolerated! Don’t monkey around! Immediately notify your teacher of any unsafe conditions you observe. Work with your group at your station only.

Report all accidents immediately, no matter how small. This includes broken glass, cuts and scrapes, chemical spills and fire. Learn the proper techniques for handling these accidents. Remain calm!

Please note the location and proper use of the following lab safety equipment: Eyewash Station Fire Safety Blanket Fire Extinguisher First Aid Kit Office/Nurse Call Button Telephone

Wear safety goggles and, when needed, gloves while engaging in lab activities. Proper dress for lab includes: Tying back long hair Removing dangling jewelry Rolling up long sleeves Securing baggy clothing Wear closed toe shoes

NEVER eat or drink in the lab!!!!! EVER!

Keep hands away from eyes, mouth and body while using chemicals. Wash your hands with soap and water after performing lab activities. NEVER touch, taste or smell any chemicals unless specified to do so.

Never rinse anything down the sink without the permission of your teacher.

Note the “SAFETY Cautions” on your lab papers before conducting lab activities.

Use the posted procedure and evacuation route for exiting the classroom and building if necessary.

In fairness to others, clean all glassware, labware and equipment at the end of the lab. Return all equipment and supplies to the proper storage area.

You and your parents must agree to and sign the safety contract in order to participate in lab activities. Failure to comply with safety guidelines may result in your removal from lab activities.

View the picture and answer the questions. 1. List 3 unsafe activities shown in the illustration and explain why each is unsafe. 2. List 3 correct lab procedures depicted in the illustration. 3. What should Bob do after the accident? 4. What should Sue have done to avoid an accident? 5. Compare Luke and Duke's lab techniques. Who is following the rules?

6. What are three things shown in the lab that should not be there? 7. Compare Joe and Carl's lab techniques. Who is doing it the correct way? 8. What will happen to Ray and Tim when the teacher catches them? 9. List three items in the illustration that are there for the safety of the students in the lab. 10. What is Betty doing wrong?
