Today, the Internet is a lot more than just websites Websites are important, but a basic website is not enough to catch people’s attention. People are looking for images, video, and interactivity. What do you think interactivity means on the Internet?

OpenTable is a great example of interactivity OpenTable is a website about the dining industry. It allows you to research restaurants, make reservations, read reviews from other diners, and post your own reviews.

Here are the six components of social media Can you name an example of each of these components? Apps Blogs Microblogs Multimedia Social networking Wikis

Each component has a unique feel and purpose ComponentExampleFeelPurpose Social NetworkFacebookHanging out with a group of friends Getting to know someone MicroblogTwitterTalking in the halls at school Quick information exchange MultimediaYouTubeHalftime at the game Getting a lot of people’s attention at once Blogn/aPersonal conversation In-depth discussion/sharing of opinions WikiWikipediaClass projectCombining several people’s knowledge on a specific topic AppsGoogle Maps Personal service Instantaneous information

Social networking sites are very popular Social networking sites help you connect to other people or organizations that matter to you. Sites like Facebook reach a wide audience. Businesses can have their own Facebook page. There are other social networking sites for specific audiences. Other sites include a social networking component. Do you use social networking sites? Which one(s)?

A blog is another very popular Web 2.0 tool A blog is a type of website or a part of a website. A blog is a series of posts on a specific topic or from a specific person. A blog can function as an online diary or as a type of Internet journalism, but many businesses use blogs to keep their customers up to date. If you work at a resort on a tropical island, how could you use a blog for marketing?

Microblogging is another big trend Twitter is the most famous microblog site. Twitter restricts you to 140 characters per post. This is an example of 140 characters. You may be surprised how much you can say in a small space, & you can always string tweets together... …to finish your thought if you need more space. Each post is called a tweet and if you posted, you tweeted.

Multimedia is becoming more and more important Today, more people carry cameras with them, and more sites incorporate video and images. How do you think you could use video as an Internet marketing tool?

Wikis are another way people can “talk” online A wiki is a website that allows many different people to edit the content. You may be most familiar with Wikipedia, which is an online encyclopedia that almost anyone can edit. If you were doing research for a school paper, would you trust a Wikipedia entry written by one of these people? Why or why not?

Internet marketing is constantly changing MySpace Facebook ??? Several years ago, MySpace was the most popular social networking site. Now, MySpace is basically dead and Facebook is the big thing. In a few years, Facebook may be dead, and something new— something that hasn’t been invented yet — will be the big thing.
