Warm up The warm up today is your vocabulary quiz. For the first 5 minutes-starting now!-you may write down up to 5 vocabulary words and their definitions in you notebook. You may use this on the quiz. Pick words you are having trouble with. You only have 5 minutes. When I say STOP, you must stop! I will let you know when the five minutes are up. At that time you will need to clear your desk except for a pencil and your notebook open to the “Cheat sheet”.

Closure 1. List at least 2 Earth sphere interactions that result from your own daily activities. 2. How could you find the density of your favorite food? (list the steps).

Questions from closures 1. When testing the hypothesis: If I exercise more, then I will lose weight. What is the independent variable? What is the dependent variable? 2. The part of the experiment in which all conditions are kept the same is the a. hypothesis b. Control c. conclusion d. independent variable Closure

Students of different ages were given the same jigsaw puzzle to put together. They were timed to see how long it took to finish the puzzle. What is the independent variable in this experiment? a. the number of students participating b. the type of puzzle given c. the ages of the students d. the time it took them to complete the puzzle What is the equation for density?

1. The SI system uses multiples of a. 100 b. 5 c d Measuring the volume of an irregular object can be done by using a. a balance b. a graduated cylinder c. a ruler d. a scale

Diagram In your notebook, create a comparison chart or venn diagram comparing and contrasting Environmental Science and Earth Science.

Environmental vs Earth involves man's effect on nature such as pollution of the air, land, and water the study of the physical, chemical and biological components of the environment and the positive and negative effects on living systems. Includes Environmental Microbiology, Geosciences, Environmental Chemistry, and more Focus on ways to protect life on Earth study of environment effects of nature on the earth such as weather. Earth Sciences are concerned with the study of the planet earth as a whole. Includes Oceanography, Geology, Astronomy, Meteorology, and more focus more on the existence of the life on earth mainly the study of the different layers of the earth

Question What is the key concept that separates earth science and environmental science? a. environmental science has a longer name b. environmental science describes the interactions between the environment and humans. c. earth science only covers geology d. earth science describes the interactions between the environment and humans

What is density? a measuremement of how tightly matter is crammed together. Units=g/cm3 1cm3=1ml Equation: d=m/v

Density 1. What is the density of 40 g of a material that has a density of 3.0 cm3? What is the volume of 60 g of material that has a density of 3 g/cm3?

Density practice problem A chef fills a 50 mL container with 43. 5g of cooking oil. What is the density of the oil? Calculate the mass of a liquid with a density of 2.5 g/mL and a volume of 15 mL.

Earth's spheres Earth has ____________ spheres. These spheres can interact with each other

Sphere interactions in this picture? With a partner, practice describing interactions in this scene. 03page05.cfm?chapter_no=investigation

Dice, Dice Baby Materials: for each partner= 1 dice, 1 pencil, student notebooks Directions: Clear your desks except for your notebooks. Open to a new page for notes. Between you and your table partner you have 1 dice and 1 pencil. Decide who will start. They get the pencil. Mrs. Chapel will show you the next slide. When the music starts, the person with the pencil can write. Write down each problem and the answer completely in your notebook. Do not just write question number and answer letters. Write everything out! This is a matching activity, so you will also need to be trying to match (think) while writing. While one partner is writing, the other partner is rolling the dice. When the dice roller gets a 6, he/she may use the pencil. Grab it from your partner and begin to write. The partner should grab the dice and try to roll a 6. Good luck!!!

Match the following 1. Wind blowing topsoil off a farmer's field 2. A construction crew blasting rock to make a tunnel through a mountain ridge 3. Rain falling on a farm field and making mud 4. a volcano sending ash and gases into the air 5. wind creating waves on a lake 6. Rain falling on the crowd at Bank of America Stadium (a). hydrosphere and atmosphere (b) atmosphere and geosphere (c) Geosphere and hydrosphere (d) biosphere and hydrosphere (e) Biosphere and Geosphere

Lab activity rules No horseplay Wear long hair back No phones allowed Clean up all materials including playdough and return the materials where you got them Trash goes in the trash can All group members should participate in the lab

Closure 1. List at least 2 Earth sphere interactions that result from your own daily activities. 2. How could you find the density of your favorite food? (list the steps).
