NORTHEAST CONSORTIUM Background Grant extension due to data delays Partnership with Burning Glass Instead of the survey approach, we decipher through online job postings data to shed light on ‘green’ Goals and deliverables Sustainability of the project

NORTHEAST CONSORTIUM Nature of internet data (Craigslist makes up 30% of total postings) – lots of noise Output is a direct function of our input Continuous quality-control like Google tweaking its search results algorithm Educational bias – over 50% require at least a Bachelor’s, considering 33% of the labor force has a college degree Vacancy advertising methods vary across industries (e.g., construction vs. IT) Other (spamming, rural areas, job filling…) Real-Time Data

NORTHEAST CONSORTIUM Greening of the Economy  It is likely that there may be fewer “green” jobs and more “greening” jobs (those where green skills are added to more traditional jobs)  Not like the internet boom, but there are some emerging occupations  For now green is growing in line with general job posting activity  Similar distribution by job family as the whole economy  Green jobs may not require different skills or unique training, but more of an interest in sustainability  Higher educational requirements across the board

NORTHEAST CONSORTIUM Insights from Vermont Green Sector Project*  Green means different things to different employers  Employers echo the importance of STEM and soft skills  Growing commitment from post-secondary institutions  Certification process can be problematic  Southern Vermont Energy Park *Prepared on behalf of the Vermont Workforce Development council by Nancy Burzon, Nancy Burzon Consulting.

NORTHEAST CONSORTIUM  Detailed skills analysis  Comparing real-time to official statistics and seeing if short-term forecasts are meaningful  Hardest / easiest jobs to fill  What can we learn from the group of self- identified of green firms?  Can real-time be utilized as an explanatory variable? Forthcoming Research
