 What is Organ Donation?  The Process of Organ Donation.  Who Can/Cannot Donate.  False notions about organ donation.

What is Organ Donation?  Organ donation is the process of giving an organ or a part of an organ for the purpose of transplantation into another person.

 In order for a person to become an organ donor, blood and oxygen must flow through the organs until the time of recovery to ensure viability. ( Donate Life America, 2011)

 Only after all efforts to save the patient's life have been exhausted, tests are performed to confirm the absence of brain or brain stem activity, and brain death has been declared, is donation a possibility. ( Donate Life America,2011)

 Authorization must be determined.  Once authorized, a medical and social history is taken.  After that, a doctor determines which organs can be transplanted. (Donate Life America, 2011)

 Can Donate:  Kidneys  Pancreas  Liver  Lungs  Heart  Intestinal Organs (New York Organ Donor Network, 2011)

 Almost all deceased persons can also be a candidate to donate their tissues..  This includes skin, bone, and heart valves, to name a few.  Tissues can be processed and stored for later use. (New York Organ Donor Network, 2011)

 A living person can also donate organs  These include:  One kidney  And a portion of:  Liver  Lungs  Intestines  pancreas ( Donate Life America, 2011)

 People with infectious diseases  Peoples with damaged or unsuitable organs ( University of Michigan Transplant center, 2010)

 “ If I agree to donate my organs, the hospital staff won’t work as hard to save me.”  “Maybe I’m not really dead when they sign my death certificate.”  “Organ Donation is against my religion.”  Rich and famous people go to the top of the recipients list.” (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2011)

 Designate your decision on your driver's license  Tell your family about your donation decision  Include donation in your advance directives, will, and living will ( U.S Department of health and human services, 2011)
