‘It’s a journey and we’re not there yet’ ‘The story so far’ George Coxon of the Devon Dementia Care Kite Mark Steering Group

What is it – where did it begin? In 2012 providers formed a steering group to drive up quality further and faster in dementia care It is a collaborative of over 60 independent residential care and nursing homes working together to implement evidence based best practice It consists of (i) a local Steering Group with monthly meetings, (ii) presenting at national conferences and learning events, (iii) bi annual ‘Master Class’ owner / manager training and (iv) a monthly ‘Peer Review’ programme, (v) bi-monthly Policy Development Forums focused on 6 priority areas for 2016

What are the key themes? A commitment to improvement ‘Sharing to learn’ Likemindedness Reputation enhancement Fun in care homes as much as safe! Proud staff doing the right things well Happy residents living well having a balanced life It’s a credible, provider led initiative Outstanding or Good CQC outcomes

What is it doing? The member homes are spread across most of Devon, and now include Plymouth and Torbay Meetings generally take place centrally in Exeter Raising the positive status of 24/7 care work – driving up quality and instilling pride and being impressive It links with Devon County Council’s Provider Engagement Network, the Devon Dementia Care and Support Partnership and the Health and Social Care Collaborative, attend the H&WB Board

What are the key points? Steering Group members active engagement with health, social services, research and academic colleagues to discuss new initiatives, best practice and share success stories. Steering Group members attend and present at local, regional, national and international conferences and learning events. Work with wide range of partners Best practice initiatives are shared at monthly meetings, peer reviews and the master class training.

Why Historically low quality of care in dementia homes – lots of negative press and ‘care home bashing’ Plethora of new initiatives, mostly very expensive, bureaucratic, slow and time consuming - and all overlap often lacking credibility – the DCKM is a provider led credible initiative Principles of ‘sharing to learn’ and undergoing peer review helps build trust, reputation, & compliance All homes are positively engaged in constant learning, building homely atmospheres and quality of life

Impact and next steps Positive stories and promoting residential care as part of the solution to older old people care – the over 80s having choice of high quality safe and fun 24/7 care Construction work for the integration agenda – KPOOH and GPOOH Impact on hospital activity as a result of Kite Mark Working Together – working with RDE et al Growth and extensions into domiciliary care, supported living, specific nursing home modules and adapting the model to other specialities – eg diabetes – work on this underway already
