What to Take With You to the DMV Bring originals (not copies) of the following if you are under age 19: Proof of Identification (2) Proof of Virginia Residency Proof of Social Security Number Proof of Legal Presence ▫ Proof of US citizenship or proof that you’re a legal resident Acceptable documents list is found on the DMV website

Requirements for a Learner’s Permit Be at least 15 years and 6 months old Complete application at DMV Provide required documentation You must pass A signs test (must score 100%) A general knowledge test (must score 80%) A vision test (20/40 in one or both eyes)

Requirements For a Learner’s Permit Pay fee Cost depends on how old you are at the time. (Your license or permit will expire on your 20 th birthday.) ▫ 3 years: $15; 4 years: $19; 5 years: $23 If you fail your learner’s test, you must wait 15 days before you may retake the test. There is a fee for the retake.

What If I Fail My Test? Can retake in 15 days for a fee. If you fail your learner’s test 3 times, you must retake (and pass) classroom driver education before you are allowed to take it a 4 th time. Practice tests are available online at the DMV website:

180-Day Temporary License You will receive your first “license” from Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court A temporary license is issued to you by your in- car driver education teacher once you have fully completed all licensing requirements It’s a piece of paper that you must keep with your learner’s permit until your court date s/#applying.html

Driver’s License Restrictions If Under 18 Passenger Restrictions ▫ May carry only ONE non-family passenger under 21for the FIRST YEAR of holding a license ▫ After first year or until driver reaches age 17 years and 3 months, can carry only THREE non-family passengers less than 21-years- of age Curfew Restrictions ▫ Same guidelines apply as when you have your learner’s permit.

Curfew Restrictions Drivers under age 18 with a LEARNER’S PERMIT OR LICENSE may not drive from midnight-4am. Exceptions Include: In case of emergency Traveling to from work Traveling to/from a school sponsored event When responding to an emergency call as a volunteer firefighter or rescue squad member

Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) A commercial driver’s license allows you to operate tractor- trailers, passenger buses, tank vehicles, school buses for 16 or more occupants, or vehicles carrying hazardous materials. Types of Virginia Licenses 12

Motorcycle License Motorcycle Permit Allows you to operate a motorcycle after 4am and before midnight Must be supervised by a person at least 21, licensed to operate a motorcycle, and able to assist your/riding along with you Must wear an approved helmet Motorcycle License Must pass drivers license two-part knowledge exam, motorcycle knowledge exam, and motorcycle road skills test. If you already hold a driver’s license, you may add a Class M to your license. If less than 19 years old, you must also complete a driver education program and have a motorcycle learner’s permit for a minimum of 9 months.

Your License and Safety Completing a driver education course and obtaining a driver’s license doesn’t mean you’ll drive safely. A license only means that you have demonstrated basic knowledge and ability needed to control a motor vehicle. It will take you about five years to develop the driving ability demonstrated by an average driver. Nearly half of all new drivers will either be charged with a traffic offense or be involved in a collision during their first 12 months of driving.

Organ Donation When you apply for a license, you will be asked if you want to be an organ donor. Having the little black heart on your license isn’t enough: family consent is required at the time of death. Talk to your family and share your wishes In the future, also share your wishes with your spouse and/or children Most people follow the wishes of their deceased relative. However, if they do not know what their relative wants, they will likely not donate.

Important Driving Laws to Know (DE 1b) Seat Belts Everyone in the car must wear a seat belt All passengers of any age must wear a seat belt Cell Phones Drivers at any age may not operate a vehicle while using a cell phone, even if it’s connected to a hands-free device. Texting Drivers of any age may not text while driving Primary offense with a $125 fine for first offense $250 for second and subsequent offenses

Ticket Under 18 Ticket Under Age 18 Must pay fine and court cost. Must complete a driver improvement clinic within 90 days. Must retake the general knowledge test at DMV when you renew your license at age 20. Second Ticket Under Age 18 License suspended for 90 days. Must complete another driver improvement clinic

DUI CONVICTIONS If convicted, first offense: $1,000 fine 1 year in prison

Suspensions/Revocations T – 1.9 Topic 2 Lesson 3 Suspension Your privilege to drive has been withdrawn temporarily. Judge may grant restricted driving privileges to and from work, school, or VASAP class. Revocation Your privilege to drive has been terminated. Must reapply for a driver’s license after revocation period has passed. Administrative License Suspension (ALS) If your are under age 21 and you register a BAC of 0.02 to 0.08, (over age 21, if you register a BAC 0.08 or higher) or refuse to take the breath test, your driver’s license will be suspended for seven days immediately after arrest. 23

License Suspension & Revocation Suspended License “Legally grounded” by a judge from driving for a set time period. Once time period is over, you may drive again. Revoked License Driving privileges have been terminated by a judge for a set time period. Once time period is over, you must reapply (including passing your test) to get a license again.

Your License May Be Suspended or Revoked If You… Register an uninsured vehicle without paying the uninsured motorist fee. Become delinquent in your child support payments by 90 days or $5,000. Are convicted of a “drive-off” (failure to pay for gasoline). Fail to pay fines or court costs after you get a ticket. Fail to attend a driver improvement clinic if a court orders you to. Flee from a law enforcement official Flee the scene of an accident you’re involved in that results in injury or death. Are caught using drugs. Are caught drinking under 21. Operate a vehicle while impaired. Refuse to take a breathalyzer test upon suspicion of DUI. Make a bomb threat. Receive too many traffic violations. Are convicted of reckless driving.

Driving on a Suspended License Class 1 Misdemeanor Most serious class of misdemeanors Consequences (maximum): ▫ 6 month jail sentence ▫ $1,000 fine ▫ License suspended again for the same amount of time it was initially suspended on top of the original suspension.  If it was suspended for a year and you were at month 6, your license is still suspended the remaining 6 months, plus an additional year.
