2 MyPyramid Objectives 1.Describe MyPyramid. 2.Discuss the nine key recommendations from the dietary guidelines that support MyPyramid.

6 Nutrition needs should be met mainly through what you eat, not through supplements.

7 USDA Dietary Guidelines Get adequate nutrients within calorie needs –Choose nutrient dense foods –Balance eating plan with energy needs

8 USDA Dietary Guidelines Weight management –Balance calories from foods and beverages with calories burned –Prevent gradual weight gain over time

9 USDA Dietary Guidelines Physical activity Be more active Include a variety of activities Regular physical activities in older adults reduce functional declines associated with aging

10 USDA Dietary Guidelines Food groups to encourage –Fruits and vegetables: sufficient amount and variety –Whole-grain products –Fat-free or low fat milk or milk products

11 USDA Dietary Guidelines Fats –Keep saturated fatty acids, cholesterol, and trans fatty acid consumption low (read food labels) –Keep total fat intake between 20 to 35 percent of calories – Choose lean, low-fat, or fat-free

12 USDA Dietary Guidelines Carbohydrates –Choose fiber-rich fruits, vegetables, and whole grains –Choose and prepare foods and beverages with little added sugars or caloric sweeteners –Eat fewer carbohydrates and brush teeth to prevent cavities

13 USDA Dietary Guidelines Sodium and potassium –Consume less than 1 tsp of salt a day –Choose and prepare foods with little salt and eat fruits and vegetables for potassium –Some people should consume less than ¾ teaspoon of salt daily

14 USDA Dietary Guidelines Alcoholic beverages –Be sensible and drink in moderation –Some people should not drink alcohol at all –Do not drink with certain activities
