MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 8 NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate Huntsville, Alabama IVGEN Overview  With NASA’s desire to return to the Moon and to extend manned exploration missions to Mars, there is an increased likelihood of a mishap and/or medical emergency. With a focus on minimizing up-mass for exploration missions, it is desirable to have a system onboard that will produce intravenous (IV) solutions as needed rather than flying large quantities of pre-made IV solutions that have a limited shelf life.  IVGEN’s objective is to design a compact water purification system to reliably produce Sterile Water for Injection (SWI) and provide a pharmaceutical mixing capability in a reduced gravity environment with minimal dependency on spacecraft power resources.  A prototype of IVGEN is to be tested on ISS in 2010.

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 10 NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate Huntsville, Alabama Simplified IVGEN on-orbit operations  Hardware Setup Accumulator Fill Experiment Initiation Experiment Shutdown Hardware Stow Hardware Setup Crew installs IVGEN hardware in MSG. Experiment Initiation IVGEN system is started and MSG nitrogen slowly pushes water (1 Liter per hour) through purification system into a water collection bag (IV bag). Mixing apparatus is activated to mix sodium chloride crystals with purified water resulting in normal saline solution. Accumulator Fill Crew disconnects and removes accumulator from MSG and transports to either the Water Processing Assembly (if available), or to a Contingency Water Container (CWC). Crew fills liquid side of accumulator with drinking quality water from one of the two locations above. Crew re-installs accumulator in MSG and connects MSG nitrogen to gas side of accumulator Run 1-5 Run 6 Experiment Shutdown Crew member squeezes filled IV bag to transfer contents through a tube into an empty IV bag. During this process, a conductivity sensor verifies uniform mixing has taken place. Crew transports filled IV bags to refrigerated location for stowage Repeat process for desired number of samples Hardware Stow Crew removes IVGEN hardware from MSG.
