Presentation transcript:

Biggest Problems facing Africa Today… 1. CIVIL WARS/ETHNIC CONFLICT 2. POVERTY WITH A GROWING POPULATION (most farmers are subsistence farmers) 3. UNEQUAL DISTRIBUTION OF RESOURCES (water, diamonds, gold, oil…) 4. LACK OF EDUCATION (Literacy rates are 50% -86%) 5. POOR HEALTH CARE

Healthcare in Africa What do you think the life expectancy is in Africa? What is the current life expectancy of the U.S.? 46 years of age 79 years of age

Healthcare Comparison Africa Infant mortality: 100 per 1,000 Safe drinking water access: 58% United States Infant mortality: 7 per 1,000 Safe drinking water access: 100%

What do you think are the top 5 diseases affecting the world today? AFRICA TODAY …

World’s Top 5 Diseases: 1. THE COMMON COLD 2. CANCER 3. ASTHMA 4. HIV/AIDS 5. DIABETES

How many people do you think are infected with HIV/AIDS in Africa? 25 million…that is double the amount of people taken from Africa during the slave trade!

AIDS in Africa…. What percentage of the HIV/AIDS cases world wide are located in Sub-Saharan Africa? 64% … that means that out of every 100 people in the world who have HIV/AIDS – 64 of them live in Sub-Saharan Africa

AIDS is now the leading cause of death in Sub-Saharan Africa, far surpassing the traditional deadly diseases of malaria, tuberculosis, and pneumonia. AIDS killed 2.2 million Africans in 1999, versus 300,000 AIDS deaths 10 years previously.

Why does this disease continue to spread in Africa but is slowing in the rest of the world?

Lack of Knowledge… Many people do not know they have HIV or AIDS, and they inadvertently pass it on to other people. Some people don’t even know what HIV – AIDS is, and they pass it on to other people. Some people have heard about the virus, but don’t know how it is spread to other people or how to protect themselves. Untrue myths surrounding cures for the disease exist in many places.

COST The average cost of treatment for HIV/AIDS has been lowered to… $140 per person a year The problem is over 300 million people in Africa live on less than… $1 a day

Impacts Because many nations in Africa are very poor and lack the financial means, people who have AIDS are not able to get the proper medicine or treatment. There are so many people with HIV – AIDS, and so little resources, many people die without any medical aid. Babies and young children whose mothers and fathers die from HIV – AIDS, are often left orphaned, and completely alone to try to survive on their own.

“It all started as a rumor … then we found that we were dealing with a disease. Then we realized that it was an epidemic. And now we have accepted it as a tragedy.” - Chief epidemiologist in Kampala, Uganda
