Unit 2 Indoors and outdoors Topic: Indoors and outdoors environments Vocabulary: Items around the home Function: Saying what you want; expressing prohibition Lessons: Lesson A—At home Lesson B—Places and rules

Learning Objective In this unit, you: study vocabulary related to items around the home/household objects; learn to say what you want and express prohibition; review talking about places in an apartment, and describing a particular apartment; learn to describe a house and try to talk about a historical place.

Warm-up questions Can you name a few household objects in your home? (review related vocabulary you’ve learnt in Unit 6 of VC 1) Are you familiar with this picture? A kitchen

Warm-up questions Can you describe your own flat/apartment/ dormitory? (furniture and appliances) What kind of house do you like? A simple house with basic appliances or a well-furnished fancy house?

Useful expressions Useful expressions for describing a house: The total area of this flat is 135 square meters. The flat contains one living room, one dining room, one master bedroom, and two more rooms, one is the guestroom, the other is the study. The living room is nice and roomy. At the back of the living room are the three bedrooms. The largest one is the master bedroom. It has its own bathroom. On the left is the kitchen. The kitchen has basic appliances including a cooking stove, fridge, dryer, and washing machine.

Useful expressions More expressions: It’s a two-bedroom house. One bedroom is upstairs. This house is in rural area, by a lake / beside a mountain with a big yard. My flat is in downtown area, close to a subway station. So it’s very convenient.

Speaking Listen to Track and pay attention to the words used to describe a house. Read in pairs and imitate the conversation. Listen to Track and talk about your dream home in pairs.

Speaking Group work: discuss the four types of housing pictured or other kinds of housing with your group members, talk about your choices and explain your reasons: What’s your preferred type of housing? Why? I chose the ranch house, because I like a spacious home. There are four bedrooms and a well-equipped kitchen. Besides, the house is located near a mountain. You can enjoy good views from your living room. It’s very quite there but sometimes you might feel lonely.

Communication Pair work: What famous historical places in our country have you visited? Describe one of the interesting places to your partner. Group discussion: (situation) imagine you are going on a special committee, you must choose one place to protect for the future, which place will you choose? And how to protect this place? List of world heritage in danger of UNESCO

Lesson B Places and rules Useful expressions for expressing rules or prohibition: You can’t smoke here. “No smoking”. Cars can not be parked here. You may not take these books out of the library. You mustn’t drink and drive. It’s illegal. Students are not allowed to use this room. Alcohol is not allowed on campus. You are not supposed to touch the paintings. After I hand out the tests, talking is forbidden.

Lesson B Places and rules Task 1: Suppose there comes a new student in your class, explain the rules of the school (or class) to the new student. Task 2: Think of the rules for each place. airplane park library museum
