CORE 1: OMAM

CHRONOLOGICALLY  Organize by beginning, middle, end  Each paragraph talks about a different part of your theme  Each paragraph can talk about any of the elements (including all three)

CHRONOLOGICALLY 1.Fitzgerald develops early ideas of the fire and color that the American Dream provides at the beginning of “Winter Dreams” 2.After setting up the fire of the dream, Fitzgerald uses the central section of the story to define how that color and fire can fade. 3.The finale of the story sees the aftermath of what the American Dream does to those who believe in it too strongly

THREE ELEMENTS  Organize by foil, conflict, and tone  Each paragraph is defined by your analysis of the element and how it helps develop the WHOLE theme

THREE ELEMENTS 1.Fitzgerald illuminates the illusion of the fire and color of the American Dream through his use of shifting tones. 2.Linked to the shifting tones, the novel’s core conflicts contribute to the short lived illusion of the American Dream 3.Fitzgerald defines core foils in the novel to finalize his commentary on the false reality of the American Dream

ONE ELEMENT  Organize by foil, conflict, OR tone  Each paragraph is defined by your analysis of the element and how it helps develop individual parts of the theme  Can have three specific conflicts, foils, and tones

ONE ELEMENT 1.Fitzgerald creates a tone of excitement and possibility at the start of the story as a way to show the dream’s possibility 2.While the tone begins as hopeful, the middle of the story sees Fitzgerald beginning to create a tone of authentic reality as the dream begins to fall apart 3.The tone of the story shifts to one of callous realization and hollowness as the illusion of the American Dream come to light.

THESIS!  What do you need to include?  Of Mice and Men  John Steinbeck  One good thesis verb  Your theme, word for word  Why don’t you need the elements in the thesis?

MR. MELVIN’S EXAMPLE! Throughout the course of “Winter Dreams”, Fitzgerald stresses that dreams, while providing color and fire in the world, are only short lived illusions.
