Vocabulary Slide 1Vocabulary Slide 1  Abstinence – Noun – The giving up of certain pleasures  Teenagers tend to scoff at the idea of certain types of abstinence, though it may be for their own good.  Bequeath – Verb – To leave money or property by will; to pass along  Bruce Wayne’s parents bequeathed their entire estate to their son in their will.  Cacophony – Noun – Harsh sound  To many older people, the music of teenagers is little more than a cacophony.  Debilitate – Verb – To Weaken  Superman is so puny, that even a simple space rock can debilitate him.  Eclectic – Adjective – Made up of selections from different sources.  The back wall of my classroom is an eclectic collection of t-shirts that represent different eras of my life.

Vocabulary Slide 2Vocabulary Slide 2  Fallacy – Noun – False idea; mistaken belief  Many members of one religion will say that other religious beliefs rely on fallacies.  Garbled – Adjective– Confused; mixed up  The garbled message from outer space made some people believe that it came from aliens, though it might have just been an anomaly.  Haphazard – Adjective – Not planned; random  When Han Solo and Luke Skywalker rescued Princess Leia, their haphazard plan landed them in a giant trash compactor.  Immaterial – Adjective– Insignificant; unimportant  Excuses for why homework is not done are immaterial when it comes to the grade in the gradebook.  Judicious – Adjective – Wise; careful; showing sound judgment.  A teacher must be judicious when selecting the music that will be appropriate to listen to during a class’s work time.

Vocabulary Slide 3Vocabulary Slide 3  Lackluster – Adjective– lacking brightness, vitality, enthusiasm; dull  The house had been closed up for so long that the windows had acquired a lackluster layer of dust and grime both inside and out.  Marr – Verb – To injure; to spoil; to damage; to disfigure  Darth Vader concealed his marred face behind a menacing mask.  Nonchalance – Noun – Carelessness; lack of concern  The teenager’s apparent nonchalance was actually a façade that hid deep insecurities.  Obscure – Adjective – Not clear; hidden; not well-known  My best teachers were always a font of obscure knowledge and anecdotes.  Painstaking – Adjective – Very careful; diligent  Painstaking care was taken in crafting the piece of art to perfection.
