1301 Spring 2016 Day 7 Lessons

What to expect today: Questions over the reading Check Attendance How to talk—and write—about popular music A Heartful of Hallelujah Hallelujah Covers Participation: Use vocabulary of “How to talk— and write—about popular music” to make notes on covers.

How to talk-and write—about popular music When we critique something, we make an evaluative judgment on its quality. In order to do this for music we need a certain type of vocabulary which this article provides for us. Which of these terms are you familiar with? Which ones are new? How can you use them to write a critique or describe music?

A Heartful of Hallelujah What information from this brief descriptive article could be used in a critique in three covers of this song? What information would you like to include in a critique of this song that may be missing from this article?

“Hallelujah” Lyrics—Cohen (1984) Now I've heard there was a secret chord That David played, and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? It goes like this The fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you She tied you to a kitchen chair She broke your throne, and she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah You say I took the name in vain I don't even know the name But if I did, well really, what's it to you? There's a blaze of light In every word It doesn't matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah I did my best, it wasn't much I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool you And even though it all went wrong I'll stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah Hallelujah chorus continues

“Hallelujah” Lyrics—Cale (1991) I've heard there was a secret chord That David played and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do you? It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth The minor fall, the major lift The baffled king composing Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah Your faith was strong but you needed proof You saw her bathing on the roof Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you She tied you to a kitchen chair She broke your throne, she cut your hair And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah Baby, I've been here before I know this room, I've walked this floor I used to live alone before I knew you I've seen your flag on the Marble Arch Love is not a victory march It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah There was a time you let me know What's really and going on below But now you never show it to me, do you? I remember when I moved in you The holy dove was moving too And every breath we drew was Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah Maybe there's a God above And All I ever learned from love Was how to shoot at someone who out drew you And it's not a cry you can hear at night It's not somebody who's seen the light It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Writing a Critique, cont’d Buckley uses Cale’s lyrics. Buckley: Nelson uses Cohen’s lyrics. Nelson:

Discuss What is the purpose of this song? Do you agree/disagree with the message? How does a change in lyrics change the purpose/message? What aspects of each cover were well done? Which were poorly done? Which was your favorite? How could you write a critique of these songs?

What to do for next time: Read “Writing Processes” (9-16) in The Little Viking Handbook. Full summary/response over “Writing Processes” due in folder. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE 3 QUESTIONS READY FOR CLASS DISCUSSION NEXT TIME.
