© 2009 Energy Conversion Devices Proprietary and Confidential Landfill Application – Solar Integrated Technologies, Malagrotta Italy 1 Megawatt Landfill Application.

© 2009 Energy Conversion Devices Proprietary and Confidential Solar PV Laminates (non-glass) Advantages on Landfills: Flexible panels accommodates landfill settling Deployable on ‘new’ landfills and slopes No extra costs for flat-plate glass racking system: rails, ballast cement, clips, etc.,

© 2009 Energy Conversion Devices Proprietary and Confidential Landfill Geomembrane Exposed Cap Closure Advantages: Graphics courtesy of HDR Engineering

© 2009 Energy Conversion Devices Proprietary and Confidential Exposed Geomembrane Cap Closure Advantages: Substantial avoided costs with exposed-cap closure system –avoids intermediate and structural fill layers, in-cover drainage system and vegetative cover –Enables more income from extra “airspace” which can accept trash (space no longer required for cubic yards of structural fill) Significant O&M savings on exposed cap closure –Easier inspections and troubleshooting system integrity –Easier, faster liner deployment v. Subtitle D or C cover system –Less maintenance (mowing, vegetation failure, stability issues) No landslides, no soil erosion Cleaner water runoff, no sedimentation remediation costs Enhances water table sequestration Better lechate control

© 2009 Energy Conversion Devices Proprietary and Confidential Landfill Application – Republic Services San Antonio, TX Large Scale Photovoltaic (PV) “Exposed Cap” Landfill Application.

© 2009 Energy Conversion Devices Proprietary and Confidential Flexible PV on Landfill Advantages: Accommodates landfill settling No restrictions for sites with gas removal Deployable on ‘new’ landfills and slopes Waste industry already understands the ‘liner’ technology. Unbreakable and hail impact resistant

© 2009 Energy Conversion Devices Proprietary and Confidential Flexible, Lightweight, No Racks needed No point loading No penetrations, no ballast Distributed load of only 3.6 kg / m2 Flat profile for excellent resistance to wind-uplift

© 2009 Energy Conversion Devices Proprietary and Confidential Concerns Assurances of preventing: –physical contact with waste; –ground water contamination; –gas escape Durability Legal Equivalent to Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) prescribed covers Aesthetics

© 2009 Energy Conversion Devices Proprietary and Confidential Response to Concerns: Geomembrane technology has made extraordinary advances in the past 2 decades in terms of durability, quality and experience… year warranty Exposed caps seem to provide better protection against gas escape, aquifer contamination and wasteage escape. Failures are more quickly detected and repaired. Alternate covers are always reviewed on case-by- case basis Aesthetics may be mitigated by community acceptance of a “solar park” on the landfill

© 2009 Energy Conversion Devices Proprietary and Confidential PV with no toxic chemicals or glass Produced in a clean, safe environment Low-temperature manufacturing with very little silicon content = low energy consumption. No risk of chemicals leaching out into the environment after installation. No danger of broken glass. Durable – Hail tolerant Landfill disposable And ALL our solar cells are Made In The USA!

© 2009 Energy Conversion Devices Proprietary and Confidential Project Opportunities for Flexible Solar Caps: Landfills pending final closure Landfills never formally closed but now “inactive” Sloped [heaped] Sites i.e. not flat-graded contaminated land Sites ocated very near transmission lines Sites adjacent to electricity load/demand (e.g. H2O treatment plant, trash recycling facility, military installation, etc.,) Located in state & utility territory with incentives for PV and/or with pressing RPS requirement Mining/industrial waste heaps requiring remediation by site owner Reservoirs with hardened cover structures (typically concrete, steel or aluminum) unable to tolerate weight or penetrations

© 2009 Energy Conversion Devices Proprietary and Confidential Funding Opportunities / Finance Scheduled Budget for closing / capping / remediating the site Federal Investment Tax Credit (30%) and MACRS PV Rebates and incentives (vary locally) Power Purchase Agreement distributed generation contracts Utility Owned Generation for RPS requirements EPA tracks redevelopment incentives for contaminated lands including grants, loans, bonds, etc. for Solar which vary by each state. Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) DoD Solar America Initiative incentives for “brownfield” remediation EPA is announcing the availability of an estimated $40 million in ARRA funds to supplement eligible brownfields revolving loan fund (RLF) grants
