Agenda Questions and announcements Unit 4 Project Reminder The need for ESL professionals/paraprofessionals Challenges faced by ELL’s What is bias? Culturally responsive teaching 2

Unit 4 Project—Getting to know our students: What are some of the unique needs of ELL’s? Two options--Select either Option 1 or Option 2 to complete. Be sure to note in your project which option you are selecting. (interview OR read article) 1. Interview an individual from a different culture/country who moved to a new country to learn more about the academic, social and emotional issues they experienced. (This could be a person who immigrated to the United States or to another country from their homeland). Try to identify some specific challenges and triumphs of their experiences. 2. If you cannot find anyone to interview, use the article titled "Interviewing Immigrants" and address the questions that are posted in the Project section of the course. Create 4-5 pages (at least two pages of content) Title Page and Reference Page (these do not count as part of the 2-page requirement) Include an introductory paragraph, the body of your discussion on the topics, and a summarizing paragraph as your conclusion. Refer to the Kaplan Writing Center for any writing help (click Academic Support from MyDesk). Use Times New Roman 12 pt. font, double spaced, APA format 3

Key Concepts Stereotypes: Generalizations that are made about a group of people (Typically they are assumptions and inaccurate.) Culture: Norms, customs and values held by a particular group of people. Ethnic group: Group of people that share some common characteristics that might be based on race, nationality, religion, language or other category. Diversity: Variety of ways that individuals can differ Ethnocentric: The belief that one's own culture is superior to others 4

The need for ELL professionals and paraprofessionals—Katie Couric Take one minute to view this brief clip. Then return to post one idea about the difficulties of providing ELL instruction 5

6

Question What are some of the particular challenges that non-English speakers face? Take a field trip. Come back to share your ideas after 4 and 1/2 minutes. 7

Just Because I’m Asian Just because I’m Asian Doesn’t mean my family is Chinese. And I don’t know the ancient art of Kung Fu. Just because I’m Asian Doesn’t mean I’m a math wizard And I’m not a midget. I am actually 5 feet tall. We Asians do not host karaoke parties every weekend And we don’t always cook with a wok or eat with chopsticks. I don’t speak with buck teeth or talk with a lisp, And I don’t know calligraphy or the craft of origami. The doorbell to my house is not a gong that rings, and I don’t Eat fortune cookies for dessert. So don’t judge me because my veins stream Asian blood, I am just normal like everyone else. I am like every other human being. By Kimmie T 8

1.//What is bias? 2.//In what ways can bias impact education? 9

Common biases Race Gender Age Culture Language Dress Eating customs Greetings IQ 10

So, what is bias? Bias is a state of mind where you have already decided on the issue without even knowing the full facts. You may call it prejudice or being partial. Article Source: //What are some specific examples of cultural bias? 11

Field trip ELL’s from Central and South America and cultural bias states-cpd-guide-to-cultures-in-america-documentary Return after 8 ½ minutes to discuss 1.What are two ideas you learned about these cultures? 2. How have these groups been unfairly judged (What are two cultural biases? 12

To combat bias, use a variety of instructional materials -Culturally Responsive Teaching Enough information that students can comprehend the cultural context Represent different cultural groups Avoid negatively portraying different groups Ensure cultural content is accurate and up-to-date Present traditional and non-traditional depictions of gender Present multiple viewpoints Embed this throughout the day; all day—everyday 13

Question How can the paraprofessional help students cope with social difficulties by including their culture? 14

Assisting ELL’s Develop pride Honor the home language Cultural demonstrations-food clothing multicultural day Share their language-labels photos Share stories with culturally diverse backgrounds Study multiple cultures and languages= they become validated Teach accurate information Invite parents and families to participate 15

Field Trip— article Review and discuss: What strategies did you read about that can validate our children’s backgrounds? Return after 2 minutes to discuss one-two of the strategies. 16

Cultural differences should not separate us from each other, but rather cultural diversity brings a collective strength that can benefit all of humanity.” -- Robert AlanRobert Alan //How does this quote relate to our work as educators? (How can diversity bring a collective strength to the classroom?) 18
