THINK IN THREES Reading Response Writing Support Strategy *originally developed by Jim Burke, 2002.

8-Sentence Paragraph Structure  Topic Sentence  Reason 1  Explanation for Reason 1  Reason 2  Explanation for Reason 2  Reason 3  Explanation for Reason 3  Closing or transitioning sentence

ELABORATION The Key is ELABORATION  Thinking in Threes helps to ensure that there is enough information for the topic and creates a substantial plan for writing.  Thinking in Threes prepares the writer for the 5- paragraph (or more or less) essay with at least three proofs (paragraphs) in the body.  Thinking in Threes also transfers well to public speaking. It offers enough substance for the speaker without overwhelming the audience with information.  Thinking in Threes can be applied to classroom discussion and reading response activities.

As a Reading Response  The concept is whether Sethe’s murder of Beloved is immoral.  The student examined three perspectives: Yes, immoral; No, moral; and the exception – amoral.  The box at the bottom synthesizes the ideas. Using Think in Threes to consider perspectives: Sample Think in Threes based on Toni Morrison’s Beloved.

Instructions for Reading Response  Fill in the blanks at the top of the page to complete the information requested.  In the center circle, write the topic (major issue, concept or theme).  For each triangular section, write a supporting topic, reason, or perspective of the issue.  Then, write ideas, examples, and personal commentary that reflect facts and your reflections on the topic.  In the bottom rectangle, combine the ideas to develop a common idea or conclusion about the topic.

Student sample from Beloved by Toni Morrison.
